Here's a small sample of how I go about using the extended techniques. I set up the techniques I want on unused channels in the Aria player, then create expressions to switch to those channels as required. Note, in the example, for a real score I would hide all these expressions. I left them here so you could see them.

Here's what it sounds like--straight from the box, no tinkering at all: www.ronaldjbrown.com/cf/GPO5 strings1.mp3

What you're saying is that GPO5 is getting away from using KS triggers?

I'm saying that the triggers are there, but HP does not yet recognize them. I find my approach is easier than creating my own HP techniques.

Since several techniques are individual patches I don't think you could use HP techniques to trigger those right? Unless HP can perform channel changes but then you'd have to load them in the same slots every time. I think hidden expressions is going to be the only way that I can see.

Will I get "muted strings" (con sordino) in GPO5?

Of course. Muted strings have been part of GPO since the beginning.

HP can perform channel changes, both absolute and relative to the staff's base channel. The drawback with any channel change scheme is that you have to repeat/update dynamics as the channels change. [e.g. if you have legato (on ch.1) with a hairpin crescendo, and switch to spiccato (say, on ch.2), ch.2 will not automatically inherit the dynamic level from the end of the legato crescendo.)

In the GPO5/Finale 2014.5 link-up download is a file called GPO5Prefs.xml which looks like it might be an HP extension, but so far I see no instructions where to load it, so I am waiting for a response from Garritan Support.

I got gpo5.zip when I went to the support link at makemusic. I had assumed that I would have to manually put a few files into programdata and programfiles on my computer (like with the other garritan libraries), but this was done automatically. The gpo5.zip file has three files, the soundmap, the xml file and this xml file which seems currently unused.

The GPO5Prefs.xml does indeed contain techniques. I added it to my default xml file, using an xml editor. That is probably not the official way... could mean that the next version of Finale will allow for multiple "preferences.humanplayback.xml" files... (?)

For access to the files, try:

makemusic.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5688

These are the instructions for using the GPO5Prefs.xml file (from MM Support):

Thanks for contacting MakeMusic Customer Success. The XML file should be placed in the right area during installation, but if it is not, you can do so by following the instructions in the knowledge base article I have linked below:

Answer Title: Setting up Garritan Personal Orchestra 5 in Finale and PrintMusic
Answer Link: http://garritan.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5688

There is an extra step you need to take to get Human Playback to work with GPO5 in Finale 2014.5. Here are the steps:

1. Close all open programs
2. Drag the GPO5Prefs.xml file to your Desktop > right-click it > select open With > Notepad.
3. Choose Edt > Select all > Edit > Copy
4. Hold down the Windows key on your computer keyboard and press the letter R at the same time
5. Type in the following directory:

%appdata%\MakeMusic\Finale 2014.5\Configuration Files

6. open the preferences.humanplayback.xml file in Notepad
7. Scroll to the bottom of the file > click to position the cursor after the last letter or character > press Enter once to move to the next line > and choose Edit > Paste
8. Choose File > Save and close your file
9. Relaunch Finale 2014.5

Those steps should allow Human Playback to properly work with GPO5 in Finale 2014.5.

Please feel free to respond to this case if you have any further questions about this process.

Okay, I followed these directions, but don't see any difference in HP. Are you certain that the installation process didn't already do this? It copied the other support files (the .coundmap and .xml files) to the correct folders.

The "sul tasto" sample seems to be missing.
I've tried all the Garritan Orchestral Strings (section) KS patches, and the B natural is supposed to trigger "sul tasto". instead nothing happens. it just keeps playing whatever the last KS you activated was. I went from pizzicato to this supposed sul tasto, and it just keeps playing pizz.

I've been testing manually from my MIDI keyboard. I can activate the various KS by transposing my keyboard down to the correct transposition (2 octaves down - it's an 88 key).
I can continue to play the string patch up at the top of my keyboard with my right hand, while activating the KS's with my left hand in the bottom octave.

Finale (started with ver. 3.0) now using 2012 under Windows 8.1
basically ALL Garritan libraries, plus XSample Chamber Ensemble.

Sul tasto works fine here. Make sure you modified the preferences.humanplayback.xml file correctly (I think it's clearer when using the "XML Notepad" application) and make sure you're actually using the GPO5 set and not the earlier garritan default set.

BTW, strange that MM didn't include a musx file with the GPO5 prefs loaded, so that the HP prefs could be updated the "normal" way...

I'm using the GPO5 strings, the new "GOS" strings, KS sections.
I am playing manually from a MIDI keyboard, so humanplayback preferences have no effect.
I am manually triggering the keyswitches.
but there is no effect from playing that B natural.
I can trigger ALL of the effects by playing the requisite KS.
Sul tasto is the only one that has no effect.

I have tested the violins, the violas, and the celli, and none of them appear to have a sample layer set to be triggered by that keyswitch.

Sorry I misunderstood. At least I can confirm that HP sends the intended KS (11) with the new prefs active.

I wish someone would respond to my point about the "new" GPO5 "prefs" file. I followed the directions--and it makes absolutely no difference to what is available in the list of HP techniques that I can see.

Because I can now see additional possibilities in the HP Custom list, I imagined the Prefs added capabilities (unless they were already there).

I think they were Ron. Plus the GPO5Prefs has other string techniques that aren't present. Now the interesting thing is I downloaded the zip file at work and I saw the GPOPrefs.xml file but I download it a few hours later at home to install according to the instructions above and it's not part of the zip file. Did support take it back?

Anyway looking at the xml file that WAS included in the GPO5.zip file there should be a container for SAM Brass among others. I assume that translates to additional folders in HP preferences.
