Upon attempting to save the FInale 2014 file I have spent a lot of time on (naturally, it's the only time these things happen! LOL), Finale decides NOT to allow me to save. I get the first of the two attached messages (finale error.jpg) and when I click that message away, the next one, Finale Error 2.jpg is lurking behind it.

So, my piece is sitting on my desktop. I don't want to close it, in case I discover a way around this. The most recent bakx file was from yesterday morning... all of the work I'm afraid of losing was done today.

Has anyone seen this error and have a suggestion? Any MakeMusic gurus tuning in here who might have an idea?

To solve your immediate problem, which is to not lose any work, why don't you select the entire file, copy it, and paste it into a new file. Then save that one.

Thanks for a quick reply, WIgold. It worked well for me this time. I know that this is the first thing I should think of , but it never seems as straightforward as it sounds: just copy the document, paste into a new one, and save. It's really, open a new document, add staves as needed for the document you will copy from, fix the number of measures per system, set the page size reduction percentage... stuff which is not included in the edit filter. If you don't do that first before pasting in the document, it will look so messy that it will be even harder to make those adjustments.

As I say, it worked well for me this time; all those formatting things took a while, but not as long as re-entering notes and lyrics. I'd still like to know what causes these errors. This has happened to me before, fortunately in pieces that were not hard to recreate. And I thought it was an anomaly, till it happened again, and then (today) again.

Pretty frustrating. I can't believe I would be the only user to have experienced this.

But again, thanks for giving me a push and saying, essentially, "Stop whining and do something about it!!" :-)

We have been through this on this forum a few times now. The only way I have found out of this mess is to export the file as .xml and import it into a new file. MM support recommends setting up a temp folder for exclusive use by Finale. Ever since I did that I have not encountered a occurrence of this.

Really, Ron, you've had the same thing? I couldn't find references to it on the forum. I'll try exporting to xml. But how do I set up a temp file (and where?) "for exclusive use by finale"?

The XML solution is going to be lossy.

Make a temporary folder (not file) somewhere, and point to it in Edit/Preferences/Folder/Temporary Files.

Maybe, but when I ran into this problem (in February?) it was the only way to save my work in progress. None of the other things that people suggested worked.

Does anyone know if the same works OK on a Mac?

I get the Mac version of the offending message from time to time, although SO FAR it has not cause me a problem. That is because it seems to happen to me when I've left Finale open but quiescent for a while (hours, probably). When I return to it, my instinct is to save immediately, before beginning any work on the file: that is when I sometimes get the unwanted message.

Musicians are often computer geeks, I thought...

This is what I believe to be good practice:
When working on projects save "as", like so:
Myfilename 150707 1802
Myfilename 150707 1827
Myfilename 150707 1850
Myfilename 150707 1915
Myfilename 150707 1948
Myfilename 150707 2010

This would have been yesterday evening
The next one would be this morning.
Myfilename 150708 1015

Each time I write to a log file* what has been done and save to the cloud each time I leave Finale.

Frequently check the filesize. If it suddendly increases to much that's a symptom that a file got corrupt; there must be other symptoms...
Be aware that 1Mb is already a lot! Looking into my files, I'v got one with 40+ staves and 130.000 notes which is 2.5Mb.
Don't think that kind of problems is only Finale related; programs like Microsoft Excel do have the same problems from time to time; especially when you cut and paste a lot and even more if you combine them with Visual Basic for Applications. So I can imagine that using plug-ins and scripts can increase the danger. Always save just before doing those large operations.

*How to create a LOG FILE:
Create a txt document and put on the first line
.LOG
Save and close.

See what happens next when you open it again.
example taken from my PC

.LOG
