I am typesetting a liturgical service with sections which may be taken under particular circumstances. Is there any way in Finale 2008 or 2010 to create either a heavy horizontal line in the score that is not connected to a measure? Ideally, I would like to be able to

- vary the weight
- have tick marks at the end going either up or down.

The dividers I need almost always extend from the left to the right page margin. I tried using the smart shape horizontal bracket, but for some reason, the ticks always go up, and the "Flip" option is greyed out.

An alternative would be to have text box outlines that show only on the top and sides, bottom and sides, or sides only; this would let me create a single box that spans pages, as an alternative to "directed" horizontal lines.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Jeff,

Maybe the best options would be to use the Shape Expression Designer or Graphics Tool??

You could create any shape you like with the Shape Designer and then resize it in your score. You could also, with this tool, create lines of varying shapes/sizes. However this would be connected to a measure.

If you create a Page-attached Text Block you would be able to create simple lines, but not have very much control over the display as you are wanting - from what I can see in your question.

The Graphics Tool might be the best option. As this will allow you to create your shapes outside - as you want them to look - and import them into your score to do with as you wish - but you may find this limiting with regard to on-the-spot control over line thickness, etc. You will be able to place this anywhere on the page you want.

Here are some links that might be helpful:

1. Expression Tool

2. Shape Designer

3. Graphics Tool

4. More Graphics Tool

Hope that helps! Maybe there are other users here that have done something like this and can cover some other options.

Has anyone else done something like this who could give Jeff some suggestions?

Let us know if you have any other questions, Jeff!

A Smart Shape could still be the answer. If the ones provided don't do what you want, you can design your own (smart shape palette - Ctl-click on the question mark - Create (or Duplicate/Edit if there is something close to what you want) - and start designing/editing. The ticks are, I think, 'hooks', positive values go up, negative down, though they will be the same thickness as your line. You can even include text on the line, e.g. "To be sung on Saints Days only".

I'm with Ian on drawing a custom line with the Smart Shape tool. It will be attached to a measure, not to a page, but it's the easiest way of configuring and editing it exactly the way you want. You can use a custom arrowhead for the ticks, either use the up and down pointers provided or design your own.
