When I attempted to close the file I got a message saying that the file could not be found. I checked the folder in Windows and, indeed, my original file was gone. Now, last time we went through this issue several people tried to tell me that I was mistaken and that I should do this and that and the other thing. I want to make it absolutely clear that I am not a rookie. I have been working with computers, both professionally and personally, since 1982 and I think I know what I am talking about. My original file has been deleted, removed, lost, messed up pointer--whatever--but it was not accessible by me. I could not "save" or "save as" because both options apparently depend on the existence of a disk file.
Instead of panicking I started exploring my options--the file was in RAM because I could still edit it and play it back. The light bulb eventually came on: I exported the file as XML. Success, as that forced the creation of a new file based on what was in RAM at the time. I could then import the XML file and everything was now restored.
I have no idea what causes this. It has been almost two months since the last occurrence--and I am closing and saving files several times every day. Nothing was different or unusual this time. The file wasn't even particularly large--a work for piano about 30 measures long at this point.
When I opened a support case on this in early January the tech told me to reinstall Finale. I was skeptical then that this would address the problem and apparently I was right. There is something rotten in the state of Finale2014d internals that is going to be a bugger to debug. But, if it happens to you, at least there is a way to avoid losing all your work.
And let's not fill this thread with everyone's stories on their backup procedures. We've been through that and it is irrelevant to this problem. This is a random and rare event that has no apparent connection to how long ago you last saved, and how you did it, or what order you save and close in.

I'm not sure if it was exactly the same but something prompted me to freak out (perhaps because I couldn't save) so I restarted Finale and found out the file I was just working on was missing.
Yeah, I have backup procedures now but I didn't know about the saving as XML trick. Thanks.
I do get a message more frequently when saving in 2012c that it cannot find a .bak file or something (someone else recently made a thread). I simply save normally again and everything is fine.
Actually, I will mention my backup method, dropbox, because this may give a clue. Check the attached pictures. When I "edit" a file that is say, a python file, on the version history it shows my older versions as "edited by me on date etc." This makes sense. However, looking at a Finale file, I see the version history as a series of files that haven't been "edited" but "deleted" and then "added." Could this be a clue as to how Finale "saves" files? Sometimes something triggers it to delete without adding?
For those who also use dropbox (perhaps in Finale 2014d), does your Version History page for finale files look similar?
Maybe it means nothing. I'm not sure. Windows 7 Finale 2012

I see you are still using Finale 2014c. Maybe this was fixed in 2014d.

Since I have not experienced this, I can't personally check. Since they are in a different folder (at least for me), I am curious as to how they would be deleted as well.

It seems to occur whenever I leave Finale open and unused for 5 or more minutes (to go to the toilet, make a tea/coffee, have lunch, etc). I came to the conclusion that maybe my computer's screen saver or something was corrupting Finale somehow. If I'm using the program non stop, there's no issue. Go away for 5 or more minutes with the program open and, biingo, whatever file's open won't save and, somehow, all ASV/BAK files gone, too. Until MM finds a fix I'm in the habit (most of the time) of closing down Finale if I'm expecting to be away from the computer for more than a minute or two. A pain in the rear for sure, but better than losing days of work on a chart. | Back to Top | | Forum Information | Currently it is Tuesday, December 19, 2023 6:49 PM (GMT -6) There are a total of 403,820 posts in 58,165 threads.
