I want to make the kind of pedalling marks that feature a long line interrupted by little pointy bumps.

kind of like this... ----------^----^-- (but not dashed)

I guess it's a custom Smart Shape. How do I do that?

That smart shape (------^) is in the default file for Fin2002. Since there is no library support for custom smart shapes, do like this to import it to a document where it doesn't exist:

1. Open/create a file based on the Fin2002 default file
2. Place the shape in the score
3. Mark the measure with the MassMover Tool and copy it to the clipboard
4. Paste it to your own document. The smart shape will now be added to the custom smart shape list.

Best regards,

It's nice that the 2002 default file has this line as a Custom Line option in Smart Shapes, but I still find it a bit clunky to work with.

I got the idea for the attached from a former colleague. If playback isn't a concern, this works nicely:

Create a Shape Expression consisting of a wedge at exactly the line thickness of the Smart Shape (.012" in this example). In the same shape, create a box with no line thickness and a white fill, place it on the lower part of the wedge and send it to the back.

I make a metatool for this mark, and throw it on the pedal line. It's definitely cheating, but it's prints well, and that's my main concern.

Cheers.

I've previously put in a request to Coda that there could be some special sort of smart-line specifically designed for entering pedalling marks - e.g. you put the entire line in first, and then double-click in places to automatically insert an ^ mark. Imagine that, you wouldn't have to worry about lining up the start and ends of individual smart shapes! It sure would make life easier.

If you like the sound of it, email winsupport@codamusic.com or macsupport@codamusic.com.

We currently can receive email at either our codamusic.com or makemusic.com addresses. I think that will be around for a while, but I would imagine sometime in the future we'll move exclusively to makemusic.com addresses.
