Hello,
I've been trying to get the Pianist Pro iPad app to work as a MIDI controller for Finale as per the blog entry here:

After some fiddling I was able to get it to work perfectly in Finale using the OSC server connection mode however, I've run into some problems using the Network MIDI option. When I connect the iPad in the network mode, there are a lot of dropped notes in Finale to the point where trying to play chords is unreliable at best and dragging my finger across the keys like a keyboard gliss only produces a couple scattered random pitches. These problems don't exist in other applications like Garageband when the Pianist Pro app is connected in Network mode, so my suspicion is that there might be some sort of midi driver issue between OSX and Finale. These problems exist when I'm connected to my home wifi network or a computer to computer network.

I find it strange that one mode works great and the other not so great, but only in Finale. The nice folk at MooCowMusic have told me that the Network MIDI option should be the lowest latency option, and it is definitely easier, faster and neater to get working, so it'd be nice if it did work.

Has anyone else had these problems with Network mode?
Han anyone not had these problems?
Does anyone have any ideas how to solve these problems?

I'm running Finale 2011 on a Macbook Pro with OSX 10.5.8

I have not pushed it yet, but have got it to work and had no troubles. Does not help you though, sorry.

Hi Tikimon21,

Not sure if you're still checking this thread.... I've played with this for a while. As far as I can tell, only the OSC connection provides decent performance (and mostly consistent polyphonic input).

It's strange that the Network option isn't working well with Finale. I use Pianist Pro in Network midi mode with Logic Studio, Reason, and Band in a Box, and it works great with almost no latency and perfect polyphony. I'm hoping that Pianist Pro will fix this in an update soon!

Hey all, thanks for your replies. OSC is still the only mode that works correctly for me. I worked with Finale's tech support for a while and learned that the midi in latency settings within Finale have no effect on the iPad as a midi controller. Then they told me that they would notify the developers of the problem and that they couldn't help me at this time. Dan, it's interesting to see that the Pianist Pro app works with other non-apple software, thanks for that.

In the meantime this goes on my list of annoying Finale quirks right below managing enharmonics in transposed parts sad

Yes, I've had the same exact issues. Not only do chords not play fully, but I get varying differences in key velocity (not that that's a huge issue when Hyperscribing, but...)

I have not tried the app with Logic Express yet, but that was my next attempt.

The pianist pro app has a function that changes velocity based on where you press on the key (higher up is softer than lower down). This is a setting that can be switched off. If you click on the gear symbol, then click the pencil/paper symbol you can toggle the key velocity between off and 'position on key.'

It's a much more playable "instrument" with this setting turned off anyway! I keep Pianist Pro in "Harpsichord" mode most the time, with two manuals set a couple of octaves apart - and it's surprising how well it can be played. Sadly, as I don't have a Mac, I haven't been able to try the MIDI interface ...

Having said that, the chord issue could be because of the way Finale accepts chords: other music apps (Sibelius, Encore, among them) let you play a chord as slowly as you like, arpeggio style if you want, provided each new key is pressed before the previous one is let go. Finale insists you "stab" your chord with very precise accuracy, otherwise it records two or more separate notes or sub-chords. My guess is that the timing precision required might not be being fed through by Pianist Pro.
