I have been considering SmartMusic. One of my children plays trumpet, piano, and French horn; the other child plays flute and might want to learn piano. There is no school program that they can sign up for since to my knowledge no teacher has an account to give assignments or register a class. Some teachers recommend that we try it with the purpose of helping the children practice. They don't have private teachers.

How would each child progress through the program and would they be able to keep separate classes for each instrument they want to learn?  Since there are no teachers, would the assignments be generated by the program?

Thanks

Anyone can progress through any method book that is offered on SmartMusic. For example, my twelve-year-old (a trombonist) is working through Essential Elements 2000 Book 1. Although his teachers can use SmartMusic, students are not required to do so. However, at any point, I can open up that method book, or any other (that is available), on SmartMusic and work through exercises and still reap the same benefits as a player, as SmartMusic will tell you how you are doing with rhythm and pitch. The only part of the experience you would miss would be teacher feedback on those tasks.

Every child in your family can have their own SmartMusic account (the accounts are free), so they can all work independently of each other. There's no way to do individual assignments, but you can keep track of what they've done just as you would in their method book. If you did exercise 29, then go to 30.

I don't think there is a piano option, however.

Anyone can buy a computer subscription to SmartMusic at $36 a year...less than the cost of a single lesson with most private teachers. That subscription includes every resource SmartMusic has to offer. Put another way...$3 a month...less than the cost of a fluffy drink at Starbucks. And all of your children can use that same subscription.
