  1. I have a piano octave tremolo happening in mm1-2 in this excerpt. I think I have those notated correctly resulting in basically an octave trill. yes?
    • These are just 32nd notes that I changed the notehead. Is this the best way to accomplish this?
  2. I need to continue this tremolo through mm3 for the value shown, 3 1/2 beats. How in the world would one notate that!?!
  3. Any tricks or secrets about getting this this to play back?
Thanks for your help!

Look in the Articulations chapter of the User Manual. It discusses some additional steps that make for better tremolos, particularly spacing the notes equally in the measure. Also TGTools does a terrific job of making tremolos.

Your tremolos are notated incorrectly. Each of the entries comprising the tremolo needs to represent the full duration of the tremolo, so in this case, you need whole notes, not half notes. They should be spaced, however, as if they were each half notes. I know it looks somewhat jarring at first to see two whole notes in a 4/4 measure, but that's how it's done.

In M3, I assume you want the measure to be all tremolo up to the final eighth rest. There are a couple of ways to represent this; first is with two tremoloed double-dotted half notes followed by the rest, the other is to make the first half of the measure two tremoloed half notes, the second half two tremoloed dotted quarters, followed by the final rest. Neither is really elegant, but I think I like the first a little better. Tough sight read in either case, though.

For playback, the old standby is to write out the actual playback notes in a hidden staff.

Sweet! That's what I needed to know...After buying Finale, I can't afford TGTools, but they look pretty cool. Wish he posted a demo.

Well, there is a version of TGTools that is included in the Plug-ins menu of 2002. It doesn't do offer as many different options as does the full version, but it is definitely useful—especially the Easy Tremolos feature.
