Hi,

Forgive my ignorance, I'm a newbie to SmartMusic and to this forum. I'm guessing this question has been answered before, but I haven't become adept at searching the archive messages. And, quite frankly, I don't have the patience to do that right now. Anyway, I am an elementary general music teacher. I don't teach band so I have little experience with SmartMusic. I am hoping to use smart music to encourage students to practice recorder at home. I have just created a smartmusic accompaniment and have been able to make it play with the SmartMusic software. I'm wondering, however, if the kids will be able to see the solo line on the computer through the SmartMusic software. I really like that feature in Finale Performance Assessment (the cursor helps my little ones track the music while they play). I think someone told me that was available in version 8.5. Is that only an option for the accompaniments already available in SM or can someone tell me how to use that feature with the accompaniments I create?

On a separate note, I just successfully scanned my first piece of music into Finale. Woo Hoo! It was pretty slick and I am going to save so much time now that I have this figured out.

Thanks for your help!

There is a separate SmartMusic Forum. You may want to choose that from the list and post there. You should get more specific attention there because that forum is dedicated to SmartMusic.

SmartMusic 8.5 will let you see the notation, just like in FPA. It will also allow an accompaniment track to play with the solo line, but of course this won't show up on the screen.

Creating your own accompaniments with notation for display works best with Finale 2005. If you're using Finale 2004, I'm not sure how well it will work. In Finale 2005, go to the File Menu, click Launch Window and then SmartMusic Wizard. Choose the first radio button, Next, select an instrument (piccolo would work well for recorder), and continue through the wizard. You can add accompaniment staves if you like. When finished, enter your music, then go to File >> Extract Parts, and extract the solo line. This will be the file for display in SmartMusic. After extracting the part, return to your document (easy to access from the bottom of the Window menu) and go to File >> Save Special >> SmartMusic Accompaniment. Choose your options and click the Select button at the bottom left to select your extracted solo file for display. Save your SMP and you're done.
