Finale 2012:
I make a violin in Setup Wizard and I want to change the instrument name "Violin I" to "Violin 1".
In Score Manager I klick Full Name... and delete "I" and print "1".
The result is "Violin 1 I". I can not get rid of "I"!?
What is wrong?

Select the Instrument in Score Manager, then click on the Auto-number Style drop-down list and set it to what you want.

On the Score (not Score Manager)
Right click on the I or II > Full Staff Name > delete the I or II and enter a 1 or 2.

When I follow your advice is just the word "Violin", therefore no "I" to remove. See attached picture 1.
If I type "1" after the word "Violin" I get the result "Violin 1 I". See the attached picture 2.
How do I remove the "I"?

As Wiggy said, all you have to do is go to the Score Manager and select the "Instrument 1,2,3" from the list box on the bottom left for auto number style.

Sorry, I was a little confused when it was two commandments: "Do not use Score Manager" and "use Score Manager" but it all became clear when I saw the "Auto-number Style" and it must be done in the Score Manager. Thank you all!

ok, so there's an "instrument numbering" function, that from my reading hare functions like the sequential rehearsal markings feature, yes?

So, how would one go about making the instrument names like in this image? can this still be done?

You do it the old way. Change the staff name manually and turn of auto-numbering for the instrument.

(This kind of French numbering isn't supported by any of the available numbering pattern.)

as long as one can still select different fonts/font sizes/font effects within a staff name, there should be no problem.
I'm always afraid when software manufacturers "simplify" a process.. they tend to also often remove functions that were previously available.

Missing from the above advice is to look for "Staff Settings for Selected Instrument" collapse arrow in the lower left had corner of the Score Manager window. Expand it.
Otherwise, the option for numbering scheme remains hidden.

Jon,

There is no such collapse/expand capability in F2014 on Windows.  Perhaps there is on a Mac, which is what you indicate you are using.

If you were in fact referring to F2012 Mac or Windows, I cannot confirm one way or the other, since I don't have a Mac, and my WinFin2012 is off line at the moment.

Indeed the Instrument List has a such collapse/expand capability in F2014 for Mac.
I always keep the Instrument List expanded (since I have a 27" screen with 2560 * 1440 resolution).
See the attached screen shots.

This is what is in the lower left side of the Score Manger in Windows. I can't find any "expand/collapse" button.

Same information - the layout is just different between Windows and Mac.

woodwind specialist and doubler - Finale 2014d using Speedy Entry - no capslock, GPO 4 Full, Garritan Jazz & Big Band 3, Garritan Concert and Marching Band 2, Windows 8 64-bit, 12GB RAM

If the composer says in effect to the performer: "I do not care whether you perform my music or not," we cannot argue the matter. But if he indicates: "I want you to perform and respond to this music," then his fundamental duty is to write his music so that it is accessible to interpretation. When the performer cannot approach the composer's meaning because of capriciously obscure notation, he may in effect say to the composer: "Why should I bother to puzzle out your music?" - Gardner Read

Yet another UI difference between Win and Mac.  Why?  MM should strive to make the UI identical between the platforms as much as possible, unless the nuances of the OS require there to be a difference.

The last attempt on MM's part to make both interfaces the same was a public relations disaster. They took away icons and the ability to edit them from the Windows version because they weren't in the Mac version.

They should have added those features to the Mac version.  There is no reason they could not have been that I know of.  Hopefully they are there now, but I don't know, since I don't use a Mac.
