Hi,

I just installed Finale 2006. I've been very excited since it now included Orff instruments and I don't have to change the names of the staves to reflect the instrument I really wanted to use. I've encountered a problem though. I am trying to create assessible SmartMusic files for alto recorder. I go through the process as I have done with Finale 2005, but when I try to open the new SmartMusic file I get a series of three errors. I've attached a gif of the error. The second and third error are the same except they end with TMP2.$$$ and TMP3.$$$. After clicking out of the error messages, the SmartMusic screen opens up, but the notation area is blank. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Any suggestions? For the time being, I guess I will just go back to 2005 and continue to edit the staff names. :(

Hi Beth,

For displaying music on the screen, SmartMusic uses a part of Finale called the notation engine. In new Finale releases, this part of Finale is updated, and files created in it can't work in the older versions. They are currently working on and should soon be releasing the next SmartMusic which will allow files created in 2006 to be opened.

If you have some files you've created in 2006 that you need to get back to 2005 so you can save them as SM files, you can use the Music XML Export command in the File menu. Then in Finale 2005, you would go to the File menu >> New >> Default Document, and from the Plug-ins menu choose Music XML Import. From there you would be able to open the file and save it as a .mus, and in turn open the .mus file in the SM Wizard to create the Assessment file.

Also, I recommend contacting MakeMusic at winsupport@makemusic.com or macsupport@makemusic.com. It's possible they might have a better answer. Perhaps they could send you the notation engine file from the new SmartMusic (if it will work with 8.5).
