How to type fingerings in Finale. You can do this in Sibelius, type in fingerings, with a special plug-in. Here’s a way to do it in Finale.

For my students music, I just type the fingerings, using Lyrics Tool, over the staff. It’s much faster, even faster than the metatool, especially things like alternating fingers. But they are above the staff.

Today, I turned on the Adjust Lyrics feature and found that I can drag the lyric into the staff -- and it sticks to the note!

And, to change a fingering, go into Type Into Score mode, click on the note and fix it, and it pops back into place.

After fifteen years of metatool... Wahoo!!!

except this doesn't work as easily when you must add fingerings for chords.

Finale (started with ver. 3.0) 2010, 2011, 2012b installed

For chord fingering using lyric tool, possibly type in using verse 1, 2, 3, etc.??

Generally fingerings don't share a common baseline, as lyrics (in a single verse) do, but are placed as closely as possible to the note. For conventionally-placed fingerings, I would imagine that making a library of articulations with careful attachment placement is the way to go.

There are several methods I use, depending on the type of music. One can use Lyrics, Chord Symbols, Articulations, or Expressions. Each method has its strengths and weaknesses, and unique uses.

Yeah I do them with articulations as well. I have them set up as metatools so I just hold a number then click the center of the notehead. I have the spacing and placement set to automatically place them in front of the note head. Much easier than typing them in as lyrics or typing and moving into place like Sibelius.

I would like to have some sort of automated plug in or metatool that creates violin fingering numbers for all of the notes in a score.

Is there a tool that writes in the fingering numbers for different positions? It would be very useful for string teachers.
