Hi,

I'm curious if anyone has experience with SCORE. A cursory search of the web seems to indicate that it's a very olde musicke notation program that's also very powerful. I can't tell if it's a GUI like Finale though. I seem to recall a brief conversation with an engraver who used it, and I got the feeling from him that SCORE was the real deal, whereas Finale was just not "professional" enough.

Strangely reminded me of the debates over the merits of Dreamweaver/GoLive and hand-coding. Is that a fair comparison?

Thanks for any insight!

Glenn

I'm sure there are those who have more detailed info, but Score is a DOS based notation/engraving program. Everything is done through line commands. Takes time to learn (what doesn't?), but the results that I have seen of published scores are excellent. Finale does many more things, however - and that is part of its appeal.

Score was a big deal 6 years ago. "The notation program used by the publishers" was the rumor.

But score did not provide playback.... none. (I think that it may provide it now, but I am not sure). So it was strictly a program for those who engraved and did nothing but engrave. Without playback, I did not give it another thought.

I have worked with engravers that have used Score, and are of the opinion that it is the best notation program now or ever. Although I don't know the program myself, I can tell you that when asked to provide eps files for use in page layout software, Score eps's are awful.

If you make a Finale eps, you will find that noteheads are made using a music font. If you open the eps in a vector program like Illustrator or Freehand, you can convert the font characters to shapes that don't require the font for printing. A Finale notehead that is converted to a shape is made up of 4 points connected with curves drawn from the points. Score eps's are made with something like (sorry, this is from memory) 20 or so points, connected by straight lines. Based on what you print with, you may or may not see a difference when you print it out, but the result is a larger file size that has way more info to render the image than is necessary, and in an ineffecient manner.

I don't know of anything that you can do in Score that you can't do in Finale, and do you really want to use DOS?

P.S. Since I still have to deal with Score sometimes, I would be glad to hear from an expert if there is a setting that will make eps's better.

I saw Score a while back and though it appears you can engrave almost anything with it eventually (which is of course true of a pen & ruler) it was primitive in many respects. Each page is a separate file so you can't move music between pages. Extracting parts was a nightmare. I think there are limits on the number of staves per page, number of items per page etc. (though presumably you can work around this somehow). And learning it looked like you were learnig how to write the software for yourself.

I noticed the same limitations in some eps files made from SCORE I've seen. It looks like the Partita font (Finale compatible font made to emulate SCORE's look) was based on these poor-looking eps. On the other side I see a lot of very nicely engraved music made with Score that is very sharp and doesn't seem to have these problems. There must be options in Score to ouput the file in a way that you can get a better resolution in these eps. I really wish that someone could step in and explain to us the way it works.

Can you imagine?  Writing a 40 page piece and then deciding that you want to add 4 measures at the begining?  One would just about have to do it all over again, or do a huge amount of cut and paste.
