I am shopping for a new composing setup and had questions about the integration of some the programs listed in the subject. I know that GPO is compatible with Finale, but let’s just say the sounds are not quite for me. I know there has been a lot of positive feedback about it on this forum, so I don’t mean to offend anybody.

What I am trying to accomplish:

I would like my arrangements to play back with the most realism possible with the technology available at this time. Upon further editing, i would like to make them polished and presentable to clients. I realize this is no easy (or cheep) task. I am very picky about the realism as it will help me hear what I am composing in a realistic manner and allow my clients to do the same with the finished product...my dedicated machine for this project is 3.0 GHZ P4 with 2 GIG of ram...2 74GIG 10,000 rpm hard drives in a RAID array with a 4.5 seek time per drive and a 3rd hard drive for windows XP functions. My sound card is GSIF2 compatible.

In my reading I have found very little information regarding the integration of Gigastudio3 and Finale so it makes me wonder if they are even compatible at all or how that integration would work. Is additional software required? If somebody would be kind enough to take the time to explain the integration as well as how the midi is turned into a sample(IE. so i may understand If finale does a cresendo, how that represented by what you hear of the sample?), I would be grateful. I have several follow-up questions, but this will be enough for now.

Thanks!

I am sorry about posting about a semi discussed topic. I did not realize that there was a post about 15 down dealing with Gigastudio. After reading through it most of my questions still are unanswered. No information on the tascam site deals directly with finale or similar programs.

I understand that Finale should work fine with Gigastudio. I've heard that over and over again. I hope it is easy, because I just invested in a computer like the one you mentioned, have GS and Finale on it as well as some sample libraries, and I am just trying to learn how to use it before I make my first go with it.

But, truthfully, it should work fine. And with your setup, you should get some realistic sounds.

Now the fun part comes trying to choose the right libraries to buy!

Lukeart,

As David underligned, I don't see any problem in using GS+Finale. I know people who have been successfully doing so, using also Human Playback. In a sense, GS with Finale is easier to use than GPO, the latter using non-standard approach for dynamic (Modulation cc-based).
With Finale, you can easily create expressions for GS to:
- change patch
- change MIDI channel
- change technique using keyswitch
- send any peculiar MIDI message

Thanks for the replies....So my understanding right now is that Gigastudio will understand crescendos and articulations ect. but only within the articulation I have loaded? Example: If I have loaded a trumpet with a legato attack and I would like a series of notes to have a staccato/accented attack, I must manually change the articulation back and forth? Must I load a new sample all together? ("staccato trumpet?")....or do many libraries include all the various articulations in one instrument and gigastudio will understand which sample to use by the way the midi is sent to it?

If Gigastudio simply plays the articulation you have loaded, then how may I extensively edit a track (with the correct samples/attack)....must I basically treat finale as a studio musician and edit as I record each individual track in my recording software?

Hi.

I may be the only expert in using finale with giga studio and vsl. I did this on only one computer for a while for me also realism was indeed of the utmost importance. If you have vsl then you should go to the vsl forum and read my posts there about how to best use finale. Under the giga studio heading.

Two things though never ever, ever use human playback; use midi controller 7 for volume and get the notes the right length with articulations and or patch changes. Use the expression tool constantly to add dynamics, channel changes, tempo changes, and whatever is needed. I usualy have over 200 new expressions per cue.

I now use in addition to giga studio a mac based sampler in logic called exs24. Its like giga studio except its a plugin within a sequencer. However I still use finale as the controller.

2 huge problems with finale, absolutly massive problems:

1) 64 channel output limit. This may have seemed like a lot when they added midi out capiblity but its really limiting now at least for anyone using vsl.

2) No support for synch to anything especialy movies. Do you know how many film composers would die to have finale fully integrated with a sequencer or some sequencer like functions? The midi tool is pretty lame too although it does work most of the time.

Some functions you could add easily

1) a pencil and line drawing tool for the midi tool.
2) A clearer view of the midi data
3) unlimited midi I/O

Some stuff that would be more of a diffrent program

1) import video
2) smpte time code, synch issues
3) Audio plugins, Virtual instrument plugins esspecialy
