Has anybody any idea what Finale is trying to tell me here?

It tells me that there are too many notes in the top stave second bar in the first screenshot (why?). If I let it 'delete the extra notes' I get the bizarre result that's in the second screenshot.

I wouldn't be able to guess by looking at the pictures.

If I re-enter the notes from scratch, it's OK.

What I had done, which I thought ought to have worked, is I copied and pasted the bassoon part (this is still my vocal score), that has the high A flat for the first 2/3 of the first triplet and then the lower D, D flat, B flat, into the upper stave. Next I copied and pasted the lower notes into the piano left hand and deleted them from the RH, before adding the rest of the bar on that stave from another instrument. Apparently doing it this way doesn't work; but surely it should.

What is the time signature? 3/4?

I've had similar things happen when dragging tuplets; not always, but annoying when it happens. My fix is the same as yours: delete, and re-enter.

Just curiosity, but has anybody ever seen a genuine 23plet (see my second screenshot) in a published score?

I haven't tried to reproduce this error, but I'm guessing that Finale was going for 23/64 in the space of 16/64. Why is anybody's guess.

I kind of know why this is happening, but I have no wisdom for you. It's when you copy partial measures containing tuplets. Finale's internal subdivisions are limited, so when copying partial measures it is forced to "round off" the rhythmic values sometimes. It rounds wrong sometimes, which may be a software bug, but there it is. My solution is copy the ENTIRE measure and edit from there, or simply enter the notes manually.

There is a similar bug when trying to copy articulations from one partial measure to another when the articulations are assigned to tuplets. They simply won't copy, except for the first note, because in Finale's mind the rounding is not the same.
