You need to press and hold ALT while you then press Print Screen. If you just tap the ALT it will close the window or sub-menu.

P.S.: Ah. Ctrl-Printscreen brings up the Snipping Tool (which is minimized) and the drop down menu remains visible. Good to know.

I see what you mean - the ALT + Print Screen will work for any separately opened active window, but not an open drop-down. I realize that's why I use SnagIt!
