Yo ho!

I've got a music notation challenge going over here: forum.makemusic.com/default.aspx?f=5&m=142404

...it looks like one of the solutions would be to get low down and dirty and learn how to customize music spacing. Any suggestions as to how to get started on that?

Sincerely,
Dainis

In Document Options > Music Spacing, there is a button that brings up the "table entries" for note spacing. You can control the spacing allotted to each note duration. This is the only type of spacing I use. I have three spacing libraries: Loose, Medium, and Tight. (I rarely use the Tight one.)

Thanks Doug, I'll give that a shot.

I hope there's a way to specify "if in this situation, then do that with the spacing."

We'll see!

Best,
Dainis

Options -measure units-spaces
Options-document setting-music spacing options
min measure width                       -3
max     :         :                          -23
Min  distance between items           -2
Min distance between notes             -1

Manual position                             -clear

You are very close to where you need to be. In Finale 2006, it's in Options > Document Options > Music Spacing. Then look for something like "use spacing tables" - I don't have the software with me, but I think you have to click a button to get there. Keep poking around in the Music Spacing document options until you find the right dialogue. You can step through each note duration, specifying the horizontal space to allot for each.

Finale ships with 3 (I think) note spacing libraries already set up for you (loose, medium, and tight). You can probably get the results you want by loading one of these libraries and then telling the Document Options to use it.
