I was looking for a way to send the midi output of one staff to two hardware devices and had the idea of duplicating the notes from layer 1 in layer 2, where I could specify an output channel different from that of layer 1. But when I tried to copy (not move) from layer 1 to layer 2, nothing seemed to happen. As an experiment, I tried copying from layer 1 to layer 2 of a different staff, and discovered that even though I had the "view" set to active layer only, my copy nonetheless went into layer 1 of the second staff. I realize that I could still do what I want by copying to layer 1 of a dummy staff, moving from layer 1 to layer 2 of that dummy staff, then copying back to layer 2 of the original staff, but that's two extra steps every time, and I'm so surprised at Finale's refusal to copy into a separate layer that I figure I must be missing something. Any ideas?

I don't think you're missing anything.

Finale can copy things from one staff to another. It can move things from one layer to another. But it can't do both at the same time.

Kind of like walking and chewing gum, I guess  ;-)

If somebody knows otherwise, please enlighten both of us.

Roy,

There isn't a real convenient way to do it that I know of, but it can be done without creating a dummy staff.

Set the view to current layer only.

View layer one, highlight the area you want to work with in Mass Mover, and do a copy using CTRL-C or Edit-Copy, not the CTRL-SHIFT-Click method.

With your working area still highlighted, mover layer 1 to layer 2.

Now do a Paste using CTRL-V or the Edit-Paste command. That will put your passage back into Layer 1, and if I haven't screwed up the procedure, it should be in both layers.

Dick

Thanks, Dick, that's an excellent suggestion and will be my method from now on.
