I've gotten it to open maybe 1 out of 20 times. But it will not open if Safari or FireFox are open or another program. Anyone else having problems?

It now will work with FireFox open, but it crashes between 15-20 times Before it will open.
Is there someway to repair permissions I'm not seeing? It used to be in the Disk Utility but no longer.

Repair Permissions does NOTHING for Finale, or any other third-party software. It's magical abilities to fix problems were grossly over-stated.

I hope someone from MakeMusic can give some advice. It is a new computer built from scratch this month (according to Apple who looked up the date), has the latest version of El Capitan, and has the latest version of Finale. Loaded 2014 a few days ago and then 2014.5 when it came out. It shouldn't be this hard on a new computer.

That is absolutely, positively 100% wrong as any Digital Performer user can tell you. Repairing Permissions often fixes Finale as well as HP print drivers. True, few other apps are affected by this issue anymore but those three are.

Apple has done away with permissions repair in OS 10.11 but prior to this, It is a very good idea.

I would hate to see someone have problems because you are giving bad advice. Please spare us all of the crap from all of the armchair experts on the Internet. They are wrong, too. How do we know? Because repairing permissions works and fixes problems – even if you disagree. YMMV.

I have deliberately sabotaged the file attributes of Finale's app, and then run Repair Permissions. It does not fix them.

As an AppleSeed Tester, I have discussed the removal of RP with Senior Apple staff. They have removed it because it does NOTHING.

RP may give you a list of things it has changed (though sometime it doesn't change what it says it has changed), but the changes are nearly always inconsequential.

Anyway, on EC, the issue is moot: if you think RP would have fixed it, you need to find another method that will actually work.

UPDATE: Repaired permissions, restarted, reset PRAM but F2014.5 will not open on my Mac, and now when I go to the Finale site (in an attempt to download the dmg again - suspecting errors) MakeMusic says I have no updates.

I'm getting very frustrated with all this. I'll call MM in the morning but it does not instill confidence in the software or the implementation of the download option on the user site.

So how's that Steinberg notation program coming along...?

My computer on Yosemite is doing the same darn thing. I tried repairing permissions and redownloading. No joy. I suppose the next step is to try it after a reboot in Safe Mode.

Having the same problem on a late 2014 model Mac Mini (with upgraded processor, 16gb ram and upgraded to SSD drive). So far, after submitting several crash logs to the "customer success" team, I've been unsuccessful in getting Finale 2014.5 to open on El Capitan. On my old 2011 Mac Mini, which I haven't upgraded to El Capitan yet, 2014.5 opens, but preferences never save (despite having "save prefs at close" checked on).

I'm seeing many people trying to repair permissions, but since that option has been removed in El Capitan, no luck to help us out here.

I was told on the phone support line this morning that they're not seeing a lot of people with this issue. It seems this thread would say otherwise. If everyone can call/email in with this problem, perhaps we'd get some response?

In the meantime, I'm researching other software packages. In Scott Yoho's blog (at http://www.finalemusic.com/blog/finale-2014-5-is-here/), he proudly proclaims they fixed over 120 bugs in the release. How does a software company release something with over 120 bugs to begin with? As someone that paid full price for the software package, I find it infuriating that we are nothing more than beta testers for their product while they figure out what's wrong based on how many calls they get.

So far, 2014.5 is looking like another stellar beta release that the customers get to test for them. This is SO frustrating.

Make Music runs this site and sees these posts, so comments that it's not happening are ignorant, denial, or just corporate trying to hide the fact that the release was not ready. I think they just released it for corporate posturing (so they can say it's been updated) and to defuse pressure on this board that bugs aren't fixed.

F2014 being updated as 2016 approaches it quite telling.

I really don't like Sibelius, but at least once you launch it the program runs! Can't say the same for Finale. I'm staying on earlier versions but I'm really about to give up on Make Music. I don't say this lightly. I've been a featured artist in their blog twice. I love the program, but management has changed, programmers have left or been canned, and I cannot rely on an app that is so u reliable.

Get it together Make Music, or get out of the market.

Hi Corey,

While we have not seen this issue across the board with all of our Mac users, we do understand that there are a handful of customers who are experiencing this issue. Our goal is to work on these issues personally with each of our customers to get this resolved since, so far, this issue has been caused by seemingly different factors for everyone.

My understanding is that you are currently working on this issue with one of our Customer Success agents, please be sure to continue sending us this information so we can continue to help!

Michael,

It sounds like you are running into a similar issue, but have not yet submitted a support ticket for the issue. I have gone ahead and opened a support ticket on your behalf with some initial troubleshooting steps so we can begin the process of getting this issue resolved for you as well.

I received your email. Thank you. I'm sorry if I can on strong but you can imagine how frustrating it is to those who are having a problem. It's akin to a cab driver getting his car tuned up only to find it no longer starts.

I'll try your suggestions and reply.

I would love it if I had the time to spend experimenting on computers to make something work. That would be a "quality assurance" position somewhere in a software company. I don't have the time to do QA for you. I keep sending info. You keep sending what seem like every generic responses back. Responses have included: uninstall and reinstall; delete all preferences; check for extra audio components in the Library folders (there were none but the ones Finale installs); create a new admin user to see if the problem happens in another account on the computer (it did still happen).

Things I've done in addition to these are things like unplugging all USB peripherals, change out HDMI cable to monitor and disable any bluetooth audio devices. Finale still doesn't open. Mr. Mortilla has put it very well with his cab driver analogy. We're musicians--not coders. As musicians, you might imagine that any money we spend on software was hard-earned and not plentiful. The least you could do is test your product thoroughly before releasing it and saying "it's all good" when it's clearly not.

This post clearly shows that this isn't just me and Mr. Mortilla having this issue. It's not like my Mac Mini has some specialized hardware or 3rd party sound cards or any additional audio peripherals. This is an out-of-the-Apple-box computer. How old is the Mac your company tests your software on? Do you have the Apple SDK?

The Sibelius cross-program upgrade is looking better and better every day.

Corey, one suggested troubleshooting procedure often suggested is to create a new user account and try to open Finale there. Have you tried that?

This post clearly shows that this isn't just me and Mr. Mortilla having this issue. It's not like my Mac Mini has some specialized hardware or 3rd party sound cards or any additional audio peripherals. This is an out-of-the-Apple-box computer. How old is the Mac your company tests your software on? Do you have the Apple SDK?

Corey, As well as MM's own testing on several different Macs and OS versions, there are a large number of beta testers, who test the software to see how it works on a variety of hardware. I have the 2012 Mini and haven't observed problems launching Finale.

Even for a company of Apple's size, with 1 million beta testers and thousands of developers, you'll find people posting on Apple's forums saying "Don't you guys test this stuff? I installed OS X and now nothing works!" Problems that only affect some users but not others are notoriously difficult to fix, unless the common factor can be ascertained. That requires a lot of detailed info about your setup, and the setup of everyone else who has the problem. (And indeed, those that don't.)
Diagnosing problems remotely is very difficult. Unless someone is right in front of your computer, they only have the information that you provide; they can't go looking around for themselves. So I know it's time-consuming and tedious, but if you want to get it fixed, then it needs to be done. I dare say there are people with problems running Sibelius, too, and it would be churlish to swap one set of problems for another. :p

You say you've tested a brand new admin account: that rules out any user prefs and processes, which is useful info. You say it's brand new out-of-the-box. No other third-party software of any kind? No anti-virus software? Nothing like Audio Hijack? Even Keyboard Macro utilities, Logitec mouse drivers, Little Snitch, anything that affects the system, though seemingly unrelated, can cause conflicts.

The next thing I would try is to check the Finale support folders. Check that Finale has installed a set of Finale 2014.5 support folders in /Library/Application Support/MakeMusic. (The top level Library folder.)
Then, check that the User Library folders of the same name have been copied over to the parallel location in the User Library. (NB: only copy Audio Units Support, Configuration Files, Finale script, Font Annotation, Libraries, MIDI Device Annotation, and Music Files.)
Make sure you haven't copied over any old plug-ins from previous versions.

If you want to post the crash log here (as a .txt file attachment, rather than just pasted into the thread), I'd be happy to have a look at it.

If it's any consolation, I usually find that 5 minutes after I've complained to a company about their software not working, I figure out the cause and get it working again.
