Hello everyone. Before I begin with my list of questions/complaints, please allow me to give you some backgroud. I have been using Finale since 1996. I am a doctoral student in Music Composition, so I am not a newbie by any strech of the imagination (except to this board, of course). I considered myself a power user of Finale for versions 98-2003. Notice the past tense of that sentance. This semester, I finally decided to stop duel booting my powerbook, and ran into some issues with the new version of Finale.

1. In Measure Expressions, what happened to non-printing checkbox? This is available for shapes, but not text. I frequently use a number with a tempo attached for rough tempo adjustments, and now that option is gone.

2. Sppedy Entry update. In v.2003, it updated whenever I jumped to a new measure. now i need to exit out of the measure and re-enter using 0 on the keypad. Is this fixed in v.2005?

3. "Too many beats in the measure" error. In the past, I could cancel the dialoge box and fix the measure right away. now it forces me to goto the next measure and then double back. Very time consuming.

4. It is a OS X standard that when holding Shift and using the scroll wheel, the action changes form up/down scroll to left/right. Is this updated in v.2005?

5. Metatools. How can I set up all the old metatools that i learned though 8 years of use. For example, in articulations, 1 was staccato, 2 was an accent > 6 was a tenuto mark ( a dash above a note), etc. Now the > is 'a' and stacatto is 's'. I want all my old metatools back without rebuiling the library. Is there a way I can force Finale to put the old metatools in any new document?

6. Will the speedy entry window ever match the zoom level?

7. I have run into times in 2004c when an articulation would not be attached to a note unless it was inside the staff. Is this a common bug, or unique to my machine?

I am sure there are more bugs/errors that I have yet to encounter, as this is the first time I am using 2004 for a new piece (in the past, it was part printing or touch-up. most of the work was done in v.2003). I am about to upgrade one of my software packages, and having all my files in Finale format, that is my first choice. However, if I am required to learn a whole new set of shortcuts, I will have to give serious consideration to the competition. Any advice or answers to my questions would be most appreciated.

When you are in the Text Expression Designer, look in the menu bar.
You will see that the Text menu is available.
The <non printing> trick in earlier versions has been replaced with a new text style: Hidden.
The text style Hidden even has its own hot key: Shift-Command-H.

I'm on Windows, but I think Mac is probably similar. A suggestion about #5. You can create a default file and have Finale call it up as the default file with the articulations with custom assigned metatools. However, the wizard will give you the new metatools. Also, any custom templates you create will retain the metatools. Unfortunately, saving the articulations as a library won't.

Speedy menu >> Speedy Options. You can specify a fixed scaling or a range.

You can also take take your old Default File and copy it to the 2005 folder. First time, after converting, save it as a new Default File. My own Default File are probably over 10 years old.

According to someone in tech at Makemusic some time ago, the Cancel button was causing problems (file corruption maybe?). Many people complained about this being removed, you're not alone.

Change the metatools in your Maestro Default File, and then save it. Or if you've already started, just reprogramme them - it doesn't take much time at all. There is also either TGTools or Robert Patterson's Mass Copy plugin, one of which can copy metatools IIRC.

Having said this, the new metatool assignments are actually pretty good when you get used to them. There are whole lot more, for a start.

... where you will have to learn many, many more new shortcuts, and lose access to certain functions such as metatools altogether.
