I know there's a text search and replace plug-in, but if wanted to only change some of the group names, but leave some unchanged, could a script be created to target certain staves only (I believe this would require optimizing first, which I suppose could be one of the steps in the script)?

P.S.: I'm still baffled by the whole script thing. I've been too busy to play with it lately, but hope to get a better understanding of it soon.

This might be possible. You'd want to use the TSAR commands that are available in FinaleScript.

How about

//begin
search staff names "Clarinet in B^b" Times 12, bold
replace "Clarinet in Eb" Arial 12, italic
//end

Is this what you're looking for?

If you're looking to figure out FinaleScript, Open up the script entitled "Command Reminder" That will kinda walk you through all the commands. Take a look at a few of the pre-defined scripts. That will give you an idea of syntax.

I would like to be able to replace the group names on a preselected set of systems (not staves). I didn't say it correctly. For example, I would like to replace the Group name on systems 4-7 only. Is this kind of pinpoint hit possible?

You can do that using TGTools.
Optimize systems first (no need to hide empty staves).
Then go to scroll view and change the group names.
Then go back to page view, select the systems with mass mover and choose "Layout_Update Groups" within TGTools menu.
There you can specify what to update: brackets, group names or so...
