Hi!
I am trying to import both 1/8 and 1/4-tone resolution "spectral" chords from Open Music. I set up new Nonstandard Key Signature Libraries for 1/4 (24 steps) and 1/8-tone (48 steps) resolution respectively. However, the imported 1/8 and 1/4-tone resolution chords are not shown accurately.
Please, help.
Miroslav

Please explain the steps you are following.
Are you exporting from Open Music as a MIDI file, and then importing that MIDI file into Finale?
It might also help if you posted an excerpt of your Finale document.

Thank you Peter,
I am using OM's "voice" connected to "finale-export" function. I execute the "finale-export" and immediately activate Finale 2002's "Import from Open Music" plug-in (It is a part of the Composer's Assistant collection). I have no problem when I choose 1/2-tone resolution. The chord is imported with a 100% accuracy. However, it doesn't work with 1/4 and 1/8-tone resolution. NOTE: I have created both 1/4 and 1/8-tone Key Signature libraries and I am always careful not to mess up with them - I check which one is active before I import the data from OM.
I attached one Finale 2002b document.
Thank you again,
Miroslav

Miroslav,
1. Each of the 3 staves has "Key signature" deselected as an independent element in the Staff Attributes. The staves can't display multiple key signatures at the same time, like a key signature with 1/2-tone resolution, a key signature with 1/4-tone resolution, and a key signature with 1/8-tone resolution.
2. The 8 measures with entries have the following key signatures:
Measure 1 & 2: 1/4-tone resolution (Linear Key Format 2)
Measure 3-8: 1/8-tone resolution (Linear Key Format 3)
Hence, it's impossible to have 1/8-tone resolution with correct display in staff 3, measure 1 & 2.
I don't know how the "Import From OpenMusic" plugin works.
Perhaps there was no need for 1/8-tone resolution in the first two measures?
The document displays the natural harmonics (overtones), and the first two measures show the first 8 harmonics.
3. The 1/4-tone resolution key signature (Linear Key Format 2) has some errors in the Symbol List dialog box (Symbol List ID # 1):
List Element 8 has "Alter Amount" 0. The "Alter Amount" should be 3 (= 3/4-tone sharp).
List Element 10 has "Alter Amount" 0. It should be -2 (= 2/4-tone flat).
List Element 12 has "Alter Amount" 0. It should be 2 (= 2/4-tone sharp).
List Element 23 has "Alter Amount" 1. It should be -1 (= 1/4-tone flat).
List Element 31 has "Alter Amount" 2. It should be 3 (= 3/4-tone sharp).
There are 37 List Elements, of which many contain nothing. I wonder why.
It seems to me that it would be sufficient with 7 List Elements:
3/4 flat, 2/4 flat, 1/4 flat, natural, 1/4 sharp, 2/4 sharp, 3/4 sharp
And those 7 elements are exactly what I found in Symbol List for the 1/8-tone resolution key signature (Linear Key Format 3).
Too bad that you need 15 elements in 1/8-tone resolution...
4. As the next test I switched to Mass Mover Tool, selected measure 1 & 2, and used the Respell Notes utility. This action repaired the display of harmonic # 7 in measure 2. But of course, it is still too high.
5. When I repeated step 4 on measure 3-8, Finale quitted without warning. Obviously there is a bug in this section of the Finale program code.
And perhaps there is something wrong with the "Import From OpenMusic" plugin too.

Dear Peter,
Thank you for the detailed study of my document. I did everything you 've suggested, but without any success. Today I installed the new Fin 2003. Open Music's folder contains two Finale templates - 1/4 and 1/8 tone. I tried again and no success. Here is the original 1/8 template and the result. As you can see, all the details regarding the Nonstandard Key Signature seem correct. However, the result shows 1/2-tone resolution. There might me something wrong with the Plug-in.
Thank you for everything.

Miroslav,
I have ordered Finale 2003 today (by "snail mail"), so I can't open your latest attachment yet.
You wrote: "...However, the result shows 1/2-tone resolution. There might me something wrong with the Plug-in..."
I am not sure I understand. How was your first attachment (OPEN MUSIC import.mus) supposed to look, if everything were OK?
Should the 3 examples be identical (= displaying as the 1/2-tone resolution)?
Or should they be different (because 1/4-tone resolution can get closer to the correct sounding intervals of harmonics, and 1/8-tone resolution can get even closer)?

Hi Peter,
unfortunately I have only the 2003 version on my computer so I cannot post the example. The 1/2-tone resolution example was correct. It showed the harmonic partials (Fundamental C) with a correct 1/2-tone accidentals. The other two, 1/4 and 1/8-tone examples would have showed the harmonic partials (Fundamental C) with 1/4 and 1/8-tone precision (resolution). For example: the seventh partial in 1/2-tone resolution is Bb. However, the same partial in 1/4-tone resolution would be B quarter-tone low and in 1/8 resolution would be B eight-tone low. The 1/8-tone resolution is closer to the natural seventh partial- a little lower than Bb. This amount is best represented by the 1/8-tone resolution - 1/8 tone lower than Bb.
I will post the "three resolutions" in a couple of days - they will be done manually.
Thank you,
Miroslav
