I am using 2012 and was thinking about upgrading to the newest version of Finale, but with everything that I'm reading about it I was thinking that maybe I should hold off.

Agree or Disagree?

Thanks,

John

Are you still on Mac OS X 10.9 - as your signature says?

If you are on Mac OS X 10.12 Sierra (or planning to get there), then you might like to wait for Finale v25.2 - read this thread:

Have you read what they said about 2012? :p

You can download the demo and see how it works for you, without affecting 2012. Many people find that 25.1 fixes many bugs in the program and runs better on newer OS versions.

Finale 2014 introduced the ability to save back to 2012. I don't know if this is available in v25, but it might be nice to have that back door if needed. Otherwise, most that use v25 seem to be happy with it. However, it's still perplexing that some other users have experienced problems.

John,
How dependent are you on Jari's plugins? Currently, only a few of them are available for F25. Personally, I'm waiting for the full package.

I don't believe any of them is available for Mac yet. If I need to use one of his plugins, I have to take the extra step of loading the file in 2014.5 first.

I believe TGTools has a beta version for Mac. Looks like JW plugin betas are only for Windows.

On the other forum, a user asked for functionality found only in the Band-in-a-Box plugin. This is also gone from F25 and there is no replacement.

I used it once in 1998 so I don't miss it but, if you do...

Peter,
I'm still using 10.9.5. But, I'd like to go up to 10.10 instead of jumping right into Sierra or maybe go up to 10.11 El Capitan.

Does anybody know how I can get a version of 10.10.5? My Mac Mini has it on there and when I hook it up to my Mac Pro and put it into recovery and try to upgrade my Mac pro system to 10.10.5 it tells me that it's not available right now try again later but that's been going on for days now and I'm wondering what's going on.

1. On your Mini or any Mac that has ever run Yosemite, open the App Store and go to Purchased. Download Yosemite but quit the installer when it tries to reinstall.

2. You will find now find the installer in your Applications folder. Compress (zip/archive) the file — this is important.

3. Sneaker net or otherwise move the zipped installer to your Mac Pro (Ethernet, USB stick, SDHD card, Dropbox all work). The file is just under 6G so email is out.

4. Copy the zipped file onto your Mac Pro. Double-click to expand.

5. Run the Installer. Register the update etc.

6. Download the Java 6 runtime from Apple or MakeMusic and install. You will also have to download a Java 8 runtime from Oracle but that has nothing to do with Finale.

To reclaim space, you can now delete the installer and zipped copy from your Mini and Mac Pro. Having registered on your MP, you can always download again per step 1.

Failure to zip the file first will cause it not to run on the second Mac. Unzipping grants the privileges required to run the Installer.

2012 and 2011 run in El Cap and even Sierra as long as you (a) download the Java Run Time 6 from Apple or MakeMusic and (b) disable Human Playback.

Yes, very well. 25 is considerably faster for most operations: there are many bug fixes and some nice new features. It also uses much less CPU power (though playback is still high), which extends battery life.
I'm running 25 on both El Cap and Sierra. 25.1 fixed most of the issues that still existed on Sierra: 25.2 has been promised for further bug fixes.

You can always try the demo for free, and delete it if you don't like it.

When it first came out, Finale 2012 was criticised as a lack-lustre upgrade, with few new features and "under-the-hood" changes that were transparent to the user. There were some fairly serious new bugs that were fixed in updates that were not as timely as the present schedule.

Well, I've purchased 25 and will install later and provide a report. I have to call Apple first. When I installed El Capitan my email wasn't working, so I deleted the account and tried to reinstall the account. No luck.

Nope.

That only gives you the combo updaters. If you do not already have Yosemite installed, those will not work.

My earlier instructions are the ones that will.
