After installing Sierra I noticed that my Simple Entry Note and Rest palettes on Finale 25 were only showing a few icons.
I had to drag them to totally horizontal to see all the icons. Even then there was a couple missing.
All my macs were the same.

Someone else noted this same problem. I'm assuming Make Music will offer an update sooner or later to fix this and any other glitches that appear. Since you have 4 computers, maybe upgrading one with the new OS would have given you the chance to do some testing first. Now, all of them are broken (temporarily).

I did some testing but didn't notice! Was expecting Finale 25 to be fine on Sierra! but it's OK as the two missing icons I never use, and there's probably another way of entering them if I really needed them. It's the last one in each palette.
I got an email from Make Music telling me Finale 2012 and Notepad 2012 will not install on Sierra, but they still seem to work OK. Wonder what that's all about?

Andrew

That is odd since I installed both 2011 and 2012 from disk without a problem on Sierra. They are not supported by MakeMusic but they work really well if you don't rely on playback especially with Audio Units. As far as the icons, do you have them set to "lager icons?" If so, what happens if you turn that off?

Hi SF,

I unticked the "use large icons" and the missing icons came back. But when I tried to adjust the palettes, many disappeared, and trying to adjust them with the mouse is very "iffy". Doesn't always respond. A bit hit and miss really.
Did you also get the email? Here it is.

Reminder: Finale 2012 Support to be Discontinued
Following the release of the new version of Finale on 8/16/2016, technical support for Finale 2012 will be discontinued effective October 1, 2016.

In addition, testing in the upcoming macOS Sierra (10.12) operating system (scheduled to be released on 9/20/2016) suggests that Finale 2012 will not install in the new OS, nor run properly in updated systems. Learn more about macOS Sierra compatibility in this Knowledge Base article.

It's our recommendation that users of Finale 2012 upgrade to the new Finale to enjoy full compatibility with the new OS and support. However, those choosing to continue to use Finale 2012 on Macintosh should be advised to not upgrade to macOS Sierra.

We encourage Finale 2012 users to continue to find support through our Knowledge Base, Learning Center and through the community offered in the MakeMusic Forums.

Because these changes impact support, we are contacting all Finale 2012 users, including those who have opted out of email in the past. Please take this opportunity to make any desired updates to your email preferences via My Account.

The problem with the palettes has been acknowledged by MM 5 days before Sierra was released. They said an update of v.25 was due soon, but no updates for previous versions.

Hello Andrew,

Yes, I received the email but have been working in 2012 and Sierra with very little problem. Note that I do not use playback at all so if you need playback then 2012 will not be an option for you. 2012 definitely installs on the new OS. I've been proceeding with caution but since all of my clients use either 2011 or 2012 I have to come up with a solution since MakeMusic cannot…and upgrading is not an option.

Playback in 2012/Sierra works for me OK, as long as I don't use Human Playback.

Just to see if it worked, I installed Finale 2011 and the 2011c update onto a clean install of Sierra. Works fine as long as Human Playback is disabled.

Not experiencing that at all. Everything is where it should be and no icons are missing. Both of the Macs that have 25 installed are the same.

I enabled the rest palette by default on the first day (as I always do) but have made no other changes.

Interesting... I see some posts that were made in another thread a few days ago including one of mine.

Seems that if "use large icons" is not ticked, and the palettes are horizontal, then they might be OK.

I just upgraded to v. 25.

On Sierra

When the pallets are resized the icons don't redraw or move into their new areas. Hope it gets fixed soon.

Not entirely fixed. The rests pallet still closes--usually right when it's needed of course. And the option in preferences to put the rest pallet in the simple entry pallet doesn't work. Or do I not understand what that preference actually is?

The Preferences "Show Rest Palette in Simple Entry" controls whether the Rests palette appears when Simple Entry is selected. This works for me: Rests appears when I select Simple Entry. However, the Rest palette disappears when I leave Simple Entry, regardless of whether the Notes stay or hide, (which they do according to the "Close Simple Entry Palette" checkbox).

I don't know if the Rests palette hiding when leaving the tool is new, or if it's intended. I never show the Rest palette: I just select the note value and press 0 on the numpad or Shift-Enter on the laptop keyboard.

Dr. Wiggy,

OK I see how that works now ... Thanks for the tips.

I should start using keyboard shortcuts. Hammering those pallets thousands of times repeatedly can be tough on the tenons, especially when one's got to play the music on their instruments as well.

Thanks again.
