I'm forgetting how to do a thing.

in one instrument staff, I want to enter on one layer the music I want to see, and another, the music I want to hear. (this is specifically for a patch that has a sampled tritone trill). I seem to recall this is done w/ blank notation layer 1, but I'm not quite gettting it right.

If the notes you want to see are in Layer 1, then you don't want to make that the blank layer. I don't think we have enough information. Can you post a sample file?

Yes - I see that... but somehow I remember it working that way. Or maybe blank notation layer 4...

I can't really post a file right now - but this should be a standard technique in any situation. If I want to notate for the visual in one layer, and for the sample in the other, and have only the sample layer play, but only the visual be seen.

I imagine there are numerous ways to accomplish this, but I'm looking for the quickest and most elegant.

I would use the Blank Notation staff attribute for the layer you don't want to see, and Documents/Layers to suppress playback for the layer you don't want to hear.

That may work for me, though I wonder if there's a way I can do it in a staff style? I use layers a bunch in the piece, so disabling playback for a single layer for the whole thing will take some adjusting.

There are ways to mute a layer for just selected measures. How you do it can depend on several factors, so it is hard to know what to suggest. Jari's JW change plugin can do it.

I don't know of a way to suppress playback with a staff style, but JW Change can do it (each note has a playback flag). I guess you would need to go back to Finale 2014 to use JW Change. Or maybe the Score Manager can do it?

If it's just a few measures, I'd silence the notes in the Speedy Entry editing frame.

If the composer says in effect to the performer: "I do not care whether you perform my music or not," we cannot argue the matter. But if he indicates: "I want you to perform and respond to this music," then his fundamental duty is to write his music so that it is accessible to interpretation. When the performer cannot approach the composer's meaning because of capriciously obscure notation, he may in effect say to the composer: "Why should I bother to puzzle out your music?" - Gardner Read

Sadly, JWChange (in my opinion an absolute required plugin for any Finale user) is not yet available for Finale 25.

Finale (started with ver. 3.0) using 2012 (2014 has been shelved for its lack of support for older Garritan libraries), putting Finale 25 through its paces.

Still hoping that Jari finds the time he needs to upgrade his plugin collection; my entire workflow is based on JW plugins. Until then, F2014.5 and El Capitan will have to do.
