I have been using NotePad 2007— happily— for some time now. When the 2008 version came out I downloaded it onto my MacPro but my files sounded horrible when I used it. Perhaps 2008 isn't as compatible to the latest QuickTime program as 2007 is? Anyway, I cleared out the 2008 version and went back to 2007 and everything sounded fine again. But now I feel the limitations to NotePad are, well, too limiting, and have considered purchasing PrintMusic. I hesitate to do so, however, because I don't want to go to all the trouble (and expenses) only to find out that, once again, all my files will sound horrible on it. Will I find that to be true or is there something I can do to prevent that?

I don't think it's a compatability issue with QuickTime.
You'd need to supply more information about the exact nature of the horribleness. Surely, either it uses the QuickTime samples that are in your version of QT or it doesn't?

You could always download the demo version and see how it works for you.

If you still have problems, try creating a new user account and see if the problem persists. That would point to a problem with some settings in your old user account. Then you can either correct the appropriate settings or delete preferences in your user Library folder.

Hard to describe other than in 2007 the instruments have a sort of richer sound. In 2008 they sound tinny, like a toy piano playing them. I questioned the QuickTime relationship because a few years ago I downloaded the 2003 version. At that time I believe my QuickTime was 4.something. When the opportunity came to upgrade my Quicktime I did so but that immediately threw Finale NotePad off: I began experiencing the same problem as today— tinniness in the instruments during playback, all around downgrade in quality. When I contacted tech support at Finale I was told that the Notepad and the newer QuickTime were incompatible in that regard. They suggested I hold onto two versions of QuickTime on my computer so that I can use the older version while in NotePad and the newer version while doing everything else.

This is why I question the Finale-Quicktime connection.

Two versions of QuickTime....? Not sure that's possible, unless you mean one for Classic and another for OS 9, which isn't possible on a MacPro.

What OS version are you running; what version of QT?

It's possible that a newer version of QT might break an older bit of software; but unlikely that the latest piece of software would break the contemporary version of QT.

Back then I was running OS 9.1 on my first generation iMac. I was able to hold onto two versions of QuickTime at once. I kept both version's installers in separate untitled folders. It was a pain uninstalling, reinstalling back and forth when needed but it worked; practical in a sloppy, tedious, inelegant sort of way.

Currently running my MacPro on Tiger (OS 10.4.11) with a QT 7.4.5.
