I finally had to upgrade to from 2011 to 2014D and I really like it. My previous version was 2011 and it gradually became so unstable in Yosemite that I couldn't even open Finale without it crashing. So I don't know how much is new just to 2014 or how much was changed after 2011. I've been using Finale for about 20 years for piano music, mostly.

I write music for very young children and children with learning disabilities. I used to be able to change the lyric font AFTER I wrote the music. Now the font has to be chosen, evidently, before I start the new document. If I decide I need a different font, I have to re-write the entire piece. Am I correct in this? Thanks!

You can always edit the lyrics font in the window Lyrics:

Lyrics Tool.
Lyrics menu > Lyrics Window…

In the Lyrics window, select the lyrics, and use the Text*) menu to change font, size, style &c.

Peter

*) The Text menu will appear in the menu bar, next to the Lyrics menu.

Peter,
Thank you very much for helping me out! I've been changing fonts for all these years they way you said, and when I tried to do that yesterday, it didn't work. And today it does. When it didn't work yesterday, I thought maybe it was something new. I checked the help section, and it said to do it before you start the manuscript. Not sure what I did wrong yesterday, probably something silly, but all is good now.

This version of Finale has focus problems which may be partially responsible for unexpected behaviour. I've often navigated to the lyrics window and tried to paste in text only to discover that it has tried to paste the text into the verse number window (because that is highlighted) instead of the body of the window, which is where you'd expect the focus to be and the way it always has been. There are numerous other annoying examples of this one needs to get used to, and I hope they get fixed in version 2014.5.

I've noticed exactly the same thing, Vaughan. And you have to double-click to activate Click Into Score, and to drag the positioning arrows. I thought it was me. I'm glad that this sort of thing bothers others.

It's also fun when you've just loaded a document and you use keyboard commands to try to scroll to where you were working, only to be greeted by OS error-pings because Finale has shifted the focus away from the document window to a random one of the other open palette windows. Grr.

The keyboard shortcut ⌘` (for switching between windows) is an important friend when you need to move Finale’s focus back to the document window.

True, but as ⌘` only cycles between all open windows, you have to check when the document window is foremost, which can take several keypresses if you have many palettes showing. Often it's quicker and more secure just to click on the document window. It's not even so much a question of having to do this, it's the randomness of Finale's behaviour.

To the OP, you have to SELECT the lyrics in the window before changing fonts for the changes to take effect. You can mix fonts and sizes in lyrics, so if nothing is selected and you choose a different font, all that happens is the NEXT lyrics you enter will be in the new font. You may have missed it when Peter mentioned it in his answer.

Also, on my old, old computer, it takes a number of seconds while I peer at the screen wondering if anything actually happened.
