I'm trying to make an entire score staccato without putting the staccato notation on every note. From googling around, I've found that there's supposed to be a way to create a simile which says to do the same thing done in the previous measure, but I can't figure out how to make it. Note that I also want it to affect the playback for the MIDI.

Thanks.

Look up meta-tools in the Help file.

woodwind specialist and doubler - Finale 2014 using Speedy Entry - no capslock, GPO 4 Full, Garritan Jazz & Big Band 3, Garritan Concert and Marching Band 2, Windows 8 64-bit, 12GB RAM

If the composer says in effect to the performer: "I do not care whether you perform my music or not," we cannot argue the matter. But if he indicates: "I want you to perform and respond to this music," then his fundamental duty is to write his music so that it is accessible to interpretation. When the performer cannot approach the composer's meaning because of capriciously obscure notation, he may in effect say to the composer: "Why should I bother to puzzle out your music?" - Gardner Read

Create a non-printing staccato articulation.

After you have created your non-printing staccato, select the entire document and add it. Another way would be to select the entire document, add the staccato articulation; select the entire document again, and click off "show."

Welcome to the forum!

Just a wild guess:
Is the music “Plink, plank, plunk” (1951) by Leroy Anderson?

So, there's no way to do it without non-printing articulations?

Finale is a notation-based software. So the most efficient way of doing things in Finale is through a notation-based approach.

I think there might be an option somewhere to shorten all notes length by x-percentage, I'm not sure, it's just a vague memory. But it's a lot of fussing around, when it would be MUCH easier to do it with non-printing articulations.

Rather than "non printing" I prefer "invisible". They appear on screen greyed out, but do not print. It's easier to differentiate them from "non printing" items as the latter appear like normal score items, except they don't print.

And of course, the advantage to using an articulation is, if you suddenly realize that a certain note or passage requires longer, or even shorter, notes you can create a new invisible articulation adjusted to give the playback effect you want.

I often have 3-5 different invisible staccato markings in my scores for this very reason.

What's wrong with my suggestion to use regular articulations but select don't show?

One quick way is with the MIDI Tool. Highlight the whole score, and for Edit Note Durations/Percent Alteration, set it to 50%.

Yeah, that's the way I'd do it, since it won't add a bunch of markings to the score and will be easier to clear and reapply to the whole score if you add more notes.

I thought the OP was also having trouble making the visual "simile" marking. You could do that with the Expression tool (double click where you want it to go and go through the process of creating a new expression).

I was hoping that there was an expression that would effect the score, but I guess not. I'll just use hidden markings.

For the record though, I don't have the simile expression in my options.

It takes about 3 seconds to make one and subsequently a fraction of a second to apply it, if you do it right, i.e. creating it in the right category and applying it with a metatool. But it won't affect playback. How is Finale supposed to know what 'simile' is referring to? You've been given two very quick and easy methods of getting an entire score to play back staccato. Why the 'disappointment'? Are you aware of how to use the MIDI tool or how to create a new articulation and apply it to entire sections all in one go?
