I started out as a Vivace user and upgraded to Smart Music, version 6.01.  I got all of my accompaniment disks/cartridges exchanged for disks with accompaniment keys.  They have been working fine on my computer using Windows XP until this week.  Now when I try to open the accompaniment files, I get the error message that the Accompaniment Key is Not Found.  I tried installing the accompaniment from the file menu, as well as trying to load under "open".  I have not upgraded to the new subscription version of Smart Music because I already own all of the saxophone accompaniments.  Any suggestions?  Thanks, Saxophone Teacher

SmartMusic 6 was not tested under windows XP and may not be able to work correctly on some systems. If you have previously been successful running this application with Windows XP I would recommend evaluating anything that may have changed since you have been able to use your key disks correctly. This would include any hardware, software or Bios settings that you may have recently installed or changed including any windows updates you may have performed.

You may need to specify that the SmartMusic program needs to be run in a compatibility mode to function properly.

1) open your hard drive and navigate to the SmartMusic folder. You should be able to find it in your program files folder.
2) Right click on the SmartMusic application and select properties from the menu that appears.
3) Click on the Compatibility tab.
4) Place a check in the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" option.
5) From the dropdown menu select either Windows 95 or Windows 98/me.

If this does not correct the problem, Windows XP does have a system restore function that may be able to restore your computer to a previous state when the key disks were functional. To select a restore point, open your start menu and select Help. In the Help and Support center, under tasks select Undo changes to your computer with System Restore. This wizard will allow you to choose a previous date to revert your computer configuration too. You can also evaluate the dates between now and when the system was functional to determine specific changes that were made over that time period.

Hopefully this can give you some clues to help you determine your best course of action.

Dave, Thank you for your reply.  I will try what you have suggested, however, I am able to make the Smart Music System work with the test accompaniments and the demos that are loaded within the program.  It is only when loading accompaniments from floppy disks that I get the error message.  It acts like the accompaniment key is not on the disk, or perhaps has expired and is not available anymore.  I will let you know how your suggestion worked.  Thanks, Jackie

Dave, I tried changing the compatability mode to both Windows 95 and 98 and had no luck. I am hesitant to do a system restore because the updates I have done were essential for security issues. I have also tried all of the accompaniments that I own on disk and none of them will work. All of the files within the Smart Music program do work, so I am thinking the problem is with the accompaniment disks, or the program's ability to read what is on them. The error says that the accompaniment key is not available and needs to be installed. I have tried installing the disk under the File menu "install" as well as just loading straight from the disk and neither way works. I still have my foot pedal connected via my old cartridge reader, and have tried both with and without it connected. If you have any other suggestions, I would appreciate the help. Thanks, Jackie
