I have a piano melody that I want to change to the next higher octave. I can't find a menu item for it. Can someone tell me how to change octaves (and I presume keys would be the same way?) without changing instruments? Windows 7, Finale 2014.5

Keys and Octaves are 2 different things. In the default file, highlight the measures and press 9.

1. What is a default file?
2. I tried highlighting my lead sheet and hit the number 9. Nothing happened.

One way is to highlight the measures (on the desired staff), right click, then use the drop-down menu that appears to transpose the notes by an octave.

Another way is to move from note-to-note using the arrow keys and use Shift+UpArrow to move the notes up an octave.

OOPS !! When I 1st tried, I used the Staff tool icon. It didn't work.

After sending my last response, I tried it with the Highlight Tool icon. THEN it worked !!

What does the 9 mean? I presume I can do the same to change keys with different numbers?

Try it! Select things and press buttons! smilewinkgrin There's no better way to learn. Well, that and reading the Help files. Look up Metatools for the Selection Tool.

It's a Selection Tool shortcut to transpose up an octave. 8 is down an octave, 6 down a step diatonically, 7 up a step diatonically.

Or, if you have a challenged memory bank, you could do it without having to remember numbers: with the selection tool, pick the measures you want to change. Right click. From the drop-down menu pick "transpose." Pick octave up or down--your choice.
