I'm trying to find the best solution for positioning the breath mark (comma).
This symbol is an articulation in Finale.
But if I adjust its positioning in the score, the results are often unpredictable in the linked parts and the position has to be corrected.

This led me to consider using an expression instead, as its default positioning can be defined more precisely (although the horizontal position of the comma often varies...!)
In the articulation definition window, the duration of the note is reduced to 75 %.
Does a similar possibility exist for an expression (NB : I'd rather not use Human Playback).

What are your experiences with commas defined as expressions ? Which positioning and playback parameters would you suggest ?

Thanks in advance.

Definitely place the comma (luftpause, breath mark) as an expression. I don't know of any positioning settings for it which will give you perfect results 100% of the time, but the comma will stay closer to where you want it if placed as an expression.

Try these settings under the position tab in the expression designer. If you set it to align with the right barline, it should appear similarly in the parts. Playback, I don't know…

Hi

Try playback with the expression. If it has no effect then:
Attach a breath mark articulation.
Hide it.
Then attach the breath mark you created as an expression, and position it as you want. (Leave the playback tab as "no effect")

Cheers...

Inches. Type my settings with a quote mark (") at the end and it will convert your chosen unit to inches.

These settings only work if the breath mark is at the end of a measure, no? I usually manually position the comma in the uppermost staff, then use option/arrow key to copy it into subsequent staves. It'll give you positioning which is perfectly aligned.

Good point - you're right. All of my work comes with them entered as articulations, which work fine if they're within the measure between shorter note values. However, most of them seem appear at the end of the measure and I swap those out for the Expression version set as I've described above. So I end up with a mix of articulation and expression versions. That works for me but having just an expression version is obviously the way to go.

Changing the horizontal alignment to "Horizontal Mouse Click" (0 offset) and using your copy down method might have some promise.
