Has anyone had a problem mapping a Suspended Cymbal sound while using Finale 2002 with Windows xp? In my Orchestral Score, I'm using a 1 line Suspended Cymbal staff. I've tried following the instructions from "Coda KnowledgeBase Article #19411" but can't get the playback to sound like the cymbal sound of my Midi Keyboard. Any help on this is greatly appreciated!

What does it sound like? That is, is it playing the Cymbal but just not in the manner you'd like, or is it playing a completely different sound (like a tom, or snare)?

Mike Kelly,
It has a Castanet type sound. The notation calls for a Suspended Cymbal roll. After going to my Midi Keyboard for the Cymbal sound, why doesn't it reproduce that same Cymbal sound? Is it because I'm using Finale 2002 with Windows xp?

HELP somebody!

It's a midi mapping issue, nothing to do with XP. Here's the Knowledge Base link: http://www.codamusic.com/coda/faq_display_client.asp?faq%5Fid=19409&title=How+do+I+get+my+Percussion+parts+to+sound+and%2For+look+correct%3F

Should have also mentioned that at the bottom of that page there is another link for if your music looks correct but plays back wrong -- this is what you need to read (but it's good to read all of this stuff).

I have had a problem sometimes with a ride cymbal roll sounding like "castanets." The problem has been that I wrote the "roll" too fast for the tempo. It would capture only the initial attack, and not the ensuing cymbal sound. For example, if I wrote it using 64th notes, changing it to 32nds or 16th made it sound better.

Dick & Mike,
Why can't I get the sounds from my Midi Keyboard when mapping the suspended Cymbal and Snare drum?

The tablature numbers for suspended Cymbal and Snare Drum are 74 and 71, respectively. In the Percussion Map Design, why is the name of #74 listed as "Long Guiro", and #71 "Short Whistle"? Under Percussion Map Designer, when I try to map the Snare Drum sound from my Midi Keyboard, why doesn't the name change for "Note Definition"? I'm still trying to map the Suspended Cymbal and Snare Drum so that they playback properly, like the sounds from my Midi Keyboard.

FEEDBACK WELCOME from anyone and everyone!

Should have also mentioned that with my notation, I use the 3 slashes (///) to indicate the roll.

Perhaps it would be helpful if you posted your Finale file and pointed us to the exact measure you're having problems with.

As suggested, I posted my Finale File a few days ago. Has anyone seen it? I'm still trying to map the Suspended Cymbal sound for my 2nd Symphony. THANKS for your help!

All staves have predefined pitch assignments, even the Percussion clefs which default to being used as if the Treble Clef is in effect. Therefore, your Percussion Note Map using a 1-line staff, would have B4(71) as its default center line. That note should be used in your Percussion Map to assign the correct playback note to it.
