Recently, my old G3 which I was using to
run Allegro 2001 crashed during an
optimization run. Almost everything was
lost. In the meantime, Coda sent me a
different release (which fixed a lot of
problems -- thank you), 2002.r1. I
installed this version on my new
machine, a G4 iMac running System X
(Quicktime v 5.0.5 if that matters). I've
addressed most of my issues, but one
remains:

I cannot seem to get Allegro to play back
any of my scores. I'm not attached to any
MIDI instruments -- just the computer
speakers themselves (in the speaker
port). MicNotator is off. Internal Speaker
Playback is checked. What else do I
need to set up to have Allegro play back
something that doesn't sound like a very
far off soprano machine gun?

The second question has to do with
instrument libraries. I'm reasonably new
to this (I've done it by hand for many
years), and things sound fine in my head,
but the machine can't seem to make a
saxophone sound like a saxophone. Is
this another setting problem, or is this
something I have to download, or what?

Thanks for any help,

Tony

Dear "Playback Issue",

Neither am I an expert, but I will suggest a
few things to try.
1) go under the apple to the control
panels menu, open the sound panels.
On my computer you can do a speaker
test where you can check levels and set
them. This will tell you if your speakers
are running properly.
2) Try opening one of the tutorial files to
see if that will play. (preferably a one-line
tutorial). If it works, the problem is with
your file, if it doesn't something else is not
set properly.
3) If it is not you file, check your memory
on both Quicktime and Allegro. Go to the
application icon, click once, hit command
I, then the info button will appear. In the
middle of the panel you will see a menu
that says general, pull this down and
select memory. Type a larger number in
the memory boxes (both preferred and
minimum).
4) Also if it's not your file, check to make
sure you try to let Allegro use its own
preset instrument libraries. Maybe you
need to load one (see manual).
5) If it is you file, it may be a memory
problem, so see #3 and/or # 4. Also go to
the instrument window and try to put in
new patches (I recommend using the
general midi instrument selections until
you get this straighten out). If all else
fails, try putting all of the sounds on one
instrument to see if that improves it. I
usually find technical support in all the
matters hopeless (sorry) and I ending up
figuring it out by trial and error.
Also, I have been looking for ways to
improve my internal playback as well-I
have explored 1) upgrading your speaker
(I have started using a headphone it's
much cheaper and more portable).
2) Upgrade Quicktime (looks like you
have done this. Also allocate more
memory to Quicktime as I have describe
above. Also (may be part of your other
problem-under playback (the extra
selections, I forget what you call them)
select NON-SCROLLING ! If it's a
memory problem that will help it
immediately, both MIDIs and internal
speaker get overwhelmed very easily by
handling all of the data. Don't do prescan
as they recommend, because it doesn't
update the file as you make changes!
Took me a while to figure that one out!

Lastly you are supposed to get much
better internal playback if you get Roland
Instruments (it's a plug-in, I think). I
haven't done this yet, but I think it will
make a difference. Can get info on the
Mac website.

Good Luck and Let me know how it turns
out,
Pam
