When setting up a new document with the Setup Wizard in 2012 demo, I do not get to choose between the SmartMusic SoftSynth, Garritan Instruments for Finale and the Tabspace Drumline for Finale as in 2011 and earlier. This means that I will have to assign Garritan instruments (as I do prefer them over synth ones) one at a time in the Score Manager later, which is quite time consuming in orchestral scores.
Am I missing an obvious feature or will the choice of instruments to be assigned to the staves on setup be available in the full version?

The Sound Maps handle this after the setup wiz. Go to MIDI/Audio Menu > Sound Map Priority. Is Garritan at the top of the list? If Play Finale Through VST/AU is checked, click reassign playback sounds under sane menu to re-load if needed.

If using the demo, the Garritan one might not be installed. I'll check on it.

Garritan isn't even in the list, only the SmartMusic SoftSynth. And since other sound maps can't be imported that's why I need to reassign them through the Score Manager afterwards. I suppose the instruments would be automatically assigned to the Garritan instruments if that one was first in the Sound Map Priority list.

Yeah - I just checked this on mine. Garritan Instruments for Finale IS in the list, but no JABB3 or GPO4, both of which I have (and work fine via the score manager).

Ah yes, and now I see what the OP means. Not being able to hand select the playback device for each track is a major loss. Even if Finale's new smart soundmapping worked well, I would still prefer to have that flexibility. And thus far, after 3 days of use, it doesn't work well at all. (When working on a file made in Finale 2008, I let the machine assign new sounds...total disaster. And now, after I've reassigned everything, I still get a dialogue each time I open the file telling me Kontakt 2 is not available, and do I want Finale to reassign the sounds?)

?

You can hand select the Playback Device. Click Device and select either one of the Sound Maps or the player itself.

Send a case to support and they'll send the Sound Maps for Garritan products like GPO4.

Justin - thanks, I will send a case for that. But I don't see where, in the document setup wizard, you can make any choices about what devices are associated with what instruments. It can be easily done in the score manager (which I like a lot so far), but not during setup as far as I can see. It's not really a terrible inconvenience, but it IS a time-add in setting up new files.

Perhaps I have made an incomplete installation with the demo (could it be?), because Garritan definitely doesn't show up in 'my' Sound Map Priority list. And because it doesn't show up, I will have to assign each and every instrument one by one after score setup. Odd thing is, in the Score Manager window I can choose Garritan as installed with 2011, but it is not recognized by Finale 2012 as a sound map. I can't import it, so, unless Finale will recognize it somehow eventually, in 2012 I would have to do the same tedious job of assigning instruments with every new score I create.

Given the fact that I have and have had other problems with the Finale 2012 demo, I will download a new installer and have it reinstall 2012 from scratch. If that doesn't solve things, this version of 2012 is a definite no go for me.

On Windows, the soundmap files is put in the "Data" subfolder in the Finale 2012 folder. Perhaps that's the case on the Mac as well? (I'm not at the Mac right now.)

If the soundmap priority list is configured correctly (and all your devices are supported by a soundmap), I believe you will very seldom need to visit the Score Manager to set up playback devices.

It does seem a little odd that I need to create a technical support case just to receive the soundmap files for GPO4 and JABB3. Those aren't posted somewhere on the website?

Apparently, the only soundmap that gets installed with the 2012 demo is the SmartMusic SoftSynth soundmap; reason why the Garritan Instruments for Finale soundmap isn't showing up in the Soundmap Priority list. I will have to take word for it then, that Finale will automatically assign instruments to the staves based on closest match and position in the priority list. Too bad one cannot test this feature in the demo.

Are you going to the Root or user Library? The Data folder will be in the Root.

Dear Justin,
I apologize about my knowledge. I am new on OsX.
I now understand the difference between the root and the user library.
Now, I put the files in the right forder (in the root). I also can see the 2 others soundmap files (GIFF and SMSS). But these file are much bigger (many kbytes)that those that I received (few hundred of bytes). GPO4 and JABB3 soundmap files are very small, seems to be different in structure compared to GIFF and SMSS ... and still not recognize but F2012. They don't appear in the priority window !!!

Is this the right files that Seth sent me ?
Probably, again I miss something !

Hi everybody,

I fixed the bug !

Unfortunately, I received wrong SoundMap !!!
Other reasons are related to my poor comprehension of OsX !

I found right files in the Finale Knowledge Base.
I follow instructions and now, I can see GPO4 and JABB3 in the SoundMap priority.
Moreover, it works !

Thank you for all support from Finale guys.

It remains my bug with PLAY 3.0.21 with Finale 2012 (F2012) on OsX Lion. Strange because it works well with F2011 on the same system.
I will download the last update for PLAY (3.0.25) and see !!!
