Hi all,

Having a bit of trouble with Casio's PX-150 digital piano and midi entry. I have selected the keyboard as the the input device in the midi options (CASIO USB MIDI) but speedy entry isn't responding to it. I relaunched, unplugged, replugged and all kinds of different combinations but nothing seems to be helping. I use this keyboard as my primary midi controller with Cubase without any trouble so I'm not sure why Finale isn't receiving information from it. Just wondering if anyone has any tips, ideas or any solutions. I'm working with Finale 2009 on this particular computer.

Thanks so much,

Phil

I have this same problem. Please post your issue to Finale. They need to hear more from us Casio PX-150 users. Please let me know if you have a fix for this.

Here is the conversation I am having with Finale.

#1.
USB MIDI
Casio continues the tradition or providing “class compliant” USB connectivity on Privia digital pianos. This allows Privia to be used with Mac or Windows computers without the need for downloading drivers. Class Compliant USB MIDI also allows Privia digital pianos can also be used as a controller the Apple iPad simply with the use of Apple’s Camera Connection Kit.

Finale 2012 was a fresh install last week.

#2.
I recall that there may have been some issues with the 'class compliant' keyboard from Casio in the past. I will have to check with my superiors as I believe we did work with Casio a little bit on this one.

I will let you know what I come up with. In the meantime, one other thing we could try is to see if it works in one of our other notation programs. Try downloading and installing Finale NotePad ( our free version of the software) which also has MIDI input support. Get the download here:

http://www.finalemusic.com/Downloads/Default.aspx?id=537

If you are unable to get the MIDI device working with Finale 2011, 2012 or NotePad 2012, we are most likely looking at an incompatibility issue the the MIDI device itself. Usually drivers fix this issue, but as you quoted from Casio, these keyboards do not have a driver.

#3
I did a search on this issue, and according to one Casio Representative, your specific PX-150 uses a 'High Resolution' MIDI output which is unreadable at the moment by Finale. Our development is working on getting a fix for this, but it seems to have been an issue for a while now.

I will submit this as a possible bug to development for further review.

#4
I have submitted this as a possible bug to development for review. In the meantime, I have heard of a few customer who have gotten their PX keyboards to work by using MIDI instead of USB. Does the keyboard you are using have MIDI out? If this is the case, you could purchase a MIDI to USB adapter (there are some on Amazon for $5-10) and then use that to connect to the computer. If you already have one, then definitely try it out.

The PX-150 only has the USB out. Not the standard midi ports.

Hey, sorry for the late reply, just noticed your post.

I never fixed this. When I need finale I use my little Korg nano to input notes, ridiculous but it actually works.

My keyboard doesn't have MIDI ports, just a USB, so I'm stuck with it until they figure it out. I suspect that it is the cc88 controller that's screwing things up. The finale rep I spoke to was an arrogant soul who was not at all interested in helping me with a workaround. He ended my case with an email basically saying it's Casio's fault and you're up a creek until they fix it. Fine, but I wouldn't mind a cordial tone even if it's faked.

I've submitted this to Casio via online forms and a phone call. Both promised a response within a week-- haven't heard anything and that was 4 months ago. I'll just keep using my nano until they actually fix this!

Have you had any luck?

Hi all,

We're currently looking into this. We've borrowed a keyboard from Casio and are investigating some of the issues.

So any update on this? I just bought Finale 2014 and the Casio still doesn't work. My little Korg nanokey works fine. Justin, any news or ideas how to remedy this? It's all rather frustrating.

Unfortunately, Justin is no longer with the company. And even more unfortunately, no one seems to have taken his place as a company presence.

We do have more information about this problem, but we don't have a solid fix for it yet. We have an article about it here. Relevant info is as follows:

The problem is that the Privia (and many other Casio keyboards) have implemented a new Hi-def MIDI technology that Finale is not fully compatible with. What's happening is that each note from the keyboard is sending CC#88 in addition to the regular note-on/note-off signals and Finale can't interpret this.

On Windows, this isn't a problem (they provide a driver that seems to avoid the problem), but on Mac, you're stuck.

We have had some users report that using MIDIpipe by SubtleSoft as a virtual MIDI cable allows them to filter this signal and then the Privia will work with Finale.

This is on our radar going forward.

Hello, I've got midipipe up and running-Finale is recognizing the input from it. However, I can't figure out how to configure it to filter out CC# 88 which is what is necessary to strip the high resolution midi data. Can anyone (e.g. Erin) help me?

It's been a year and a half since Finale announced that "Our developers are aware of the issue and are working to resolve it."

Using a Casio PX-150, I recently encountered this problem. I was able to solve it using MidiPipe:

1. With MidiPipe, create a pipe with three elements:
- MIDI in: "CASIO USB-MIDI"
- Message Filter: only "Control/Mode Change" checked
- MIDI out: "MidiPipe Output 1"

2. In Finale MIDI setup, choose "MidiPipe Output 1" as the input device.

A question for developers: would it not be easy to incorporate such a filter into Finale itself?

Adding features is easy. Checking that the new bit of code doesn't break something else is very difficult.
