I've got a 5/4 measure followed by a 3/2 measure, with notes in layer 2 but nothing in layer 2. I want whole note rests in both measures in layer 1. I swear the program used to do this default in earlier versions...

I've followed the steps from a thread posted this past February, to press "7" in Simple Entry, but I"m getting the same result: a whole note and quarter note rest in the 5/4, and six quarter note rests in the 3/2 measure.

Help, please.

You've probably got the Simple Entry option "fill with rests at end of measure" selected. You can either turn that off, or leave it on and just Undo after it pads with rests.

Edit: Undo only seems to work in this situation with Speedy Entry, so you'll have to turn the option off with Simple Entry.

(P.S. - I don't know why you're getting six quarter rests instead of three half rests. Do you have a "display as" key signature?)

You might also uncheck "Check for Extra Notes". If you do this, then Save Preferences, the feature will be turned off in between Finale sessions.

Motet: to your P.S., yes, i do. There's lots of quarter note beat to-ing and fro-ing, which if beamed as half notes would be an optical nightmare.

And the "Fill with rests" was the issue, I'd forgotten.

Thanks.

Realize that in your 5/4 measure, for example, you can enter a whole rest in a 4:5 tuplet and then hide the tuplet.

If you want to go to unnecessary trouble, that is! :-)

"Check for extra notes" is more of an issue when you're trying to enter a whole rest in 3/4 or 2/4--a related but different issue.

Don't forget the plug-in to change empty measures to real whole rests.

Another thing you can do with Simple and fill with rests turned on.  In the 5/4 measure that has a whole rest and a quarter rest, just use the Select Tool to select the measure and clear the entries by pressing Backspace.  The same goes for the 3/2 measure.  Just clear the entries.  If you need real whole rests instead of the default place holder rests, e.g. to place a fermata on the rest, then do as Wiggy says and convert them using the plug-in.
