Finale 11b
Windows 10

I was playing around with a piece written in 12/8 time, lots of dotted quarter notes and dotted halves, which was fine.

After changing measure attributes in various ways, I found that all the dotted quarter notes had been changed to quarter notes tied to eighth notes. They still play the same, but look awkward and out of place.

Dotted half notes are now a quarter note tied to an eighth tied to another quarter tied to another eighth. The entire piece is now that way, ugh.

Is there a way I can tell it to automatically convert back? Making all those tied notes, the old dotted-quarter or dotted-half notes?

Even if the conversion isn't perfect (mis-dotting a few of them), I'd be very happy if "most" of them came out right.

Anybody know?

Jim is correct, but you probably need to first go to:

MIDI/Audio menu
Quantization Settings
More settings ...

... and make sure "Allow dotted rests in compound meters" is checked. (yes, rests; don't ask me why ... )

"Retranscribe" should then fix it, but beware; it may change other things you don't necessarily want changing ...

One thing I do is to copy the measures first, then retranscribe. After that, I set the filter to paste everything back except the notes. That way the articulations and whatever else gets wiped out is brought back. Generally, this works.

Hmm, did the MIDI/Audio menu, and checked the "Allow dotted rests" etc.

But I'm damned if I can find any menu called "Retranscribe" under MIDI TOOL or anywhere else.

I guess it's smarter than I am. Which wouldn't take much.

Does Finale 2011b have that?

Oops, found it, it's under MIDI Audio in my copy.

Seems to work on the few measures I've tried so far! Thanx!
