How can I terminate this series of messages?
My intent was how can I use a C clarinet to play using SmartMusic.
I don't think anyone answered that but I enjoyed and learned from the replies.

HOW DO I GET RID OF THIS THREAD?
The short answers are

1. http://www.smartmusic.com/students/features/default.aspx?page=page2_1_2_9  Go here and note that accompaniments are transposable to any key.

2. You can't. You can try to ask an admin.

The accompaniments can be transposed, but this transposes the notation as well. So that wouldn't work for his needs. With a C clarinet, he'd have to choose a part for a different instrument - probably flute, oboe, or violin. None of these would be terribly good options, partly because SmartMusic is designed to analyze each instrument differently. He'll get the best following and assessment by using a clarinet on a clarinet part.

OK, Derf...thanx. I thought the accompaniments were independent of the solo part, which I assumed were on printed sheets. Could he print the part in C (are parts even printable?) and then play from a transposed accompaniment?
I wish to heck someone from MM would appear here.

That is what I thought. Even a Bb trumpet might appear different to SmartMusic from a Bb clarinet playing the same note....but I was hoping...
If you have a Bb clarinet...try changing the instrument in SmartMusic to Bb trumpet or sax on a simple song and see what happens. I have already given up and I am getting a Bb clarinet.

But I am curious.

Most music that includes notation can not be printed. This is presumably to protect publishers.

I've only briefly looked at SM...I thought it was meant to be used with already-existing sheet music.

Thanx...

Well, that sort of thing definitely works (I've done it before), it's just a matter of how well. Playing a trumpet part on a clarinet wouldn't be as bad as playing a violin part on a clarinet. Violins have very rich harmonics, so the pitch recognition is probably going to be very different for violin than it is for clarinet.

You may have looked at it at a time when that was the case. The last few years have really been changing that as most of the new content includes the notation. You have all of the method books, all of the jazz pieces, some solo pieces, the exercises, the baroque titles, and the concert band, jazz band and string orchestra enesemble pieces. There are still a ton of solos that don't have the notation, but I generally just use the stuff that's included in the program now.

It's the music you read. Older versions of SmartMusic only had the background accompaniment music for you to play along with. You would have to buy the sheetmusic separately. The newer song content comes with the notation, so you see the music on the screen and read it from there.
