Hi all-

Today my laptop was stolen, the laptop on which I had Finale installed.

Was my Finale also stolen, or is possible to report this and have that one deactivated? Or do I have to buy Finale again??

Thanks for any advice you can give!!

Call MM. I bet they can de-authorize Finale on the laptop. That's my guess.

IF you provide MakeMusic with your serial number, then yes, they can de-authorise the laptop. If you have another computer, make sure you authorise that one to use up your 2 slots. Otherwise, the thief can just re-authorise it, as all the fields are auto-filled in the registration form. (MM may be able to "block" a particular computer, perhaps.)

I often wonder what people do with the contents of a stolen laptop. Do they have the competence to delete all the user data and create a new user account, while leaving the apps still on the drive?
Or do they just delete user files as they find them, and work in an environment that is constantly reminding them of them of the original owner's settings, data, details?
I suspect most are stolen and sold for a $10 bag, and they buyer might wipe and reinstall the drive before selling on.

I had my laptop stolen in vaguely comical circumstances some years ago, and I often wonder what the recipient thought of, or did with, all my personal files.

I once had a black leather case stolen out of my car (smash-and-grab from the back seat in the middle of the night). I'm sure the thieves thought it contained a laptop. What it had was my gig books. It included a binder with some of my special charts, and several fake books. I always wonder what they did with it when they discovered it wasn't a laptop. I'm sure it didn't occur to them it was worth quite a bit, and even more valuable to me than to them. I always hoped, somehow, that someone would make good use of the music, but I doubt it. It probably ended up in a dumpster.

Sorry to digress.

If a person never connects it to the internet, can it be de-authorized? I guess someone could continue to use it if they didn't?
I have wondered about that as sometimes I am out on assignment and there is no Internet available but Finale still works.

Unless someone stole the laptop specifically for Finale, I doubt they would even know what to do with Finale.

One does not need to be online to use Finale.

Sorry to hear about your laptop, send a quick note (link in my signature) or call to support with your account details/serial number and we can remove that authorization for you.

A friend of mine had their car windows smashed, and stuff including a load of CDs taken from a car park. Police were called.
Policeman: "What were the CDs?"
Friend: "Palestrina Missa Papae Marcelli; Tallis Lamentations; Bach Matthew Passion; etc, etc".

The policeman thought for a moment, looked round the car park, went to the nearest bin. "Is this them?"

I had a similar hope to find my books, but wasn't quite so lucky.
