I am using Finale 2014. The reason I ask is that I would like to create a document that has both the accompaniment followed by the solo part.

If the composer says in effect to the performer: "I do not care whether you perform my music or not," we cannot argue the matter. But if he indicates: "I want you to perform and respond to this music," then his fundamental duty is to write his music so that it is accessible to interpretation. When the performer cannot approach the composer's meaning because of capriciously obscure notation, he may in effect say to the composer: "Why should I bother to puzzle out your music?" - Gardner Read | Back to Top | |

Thanks Ron, that never occured to me. Nope, ot interested in playback. Trying to get it in a publishable format with both parts in one book.

Then, sat your page break where needed, then hide the solo part in the first statement through, and hide the piano part in the second time through. You might need to force signatures to appear, but that is easy.

Just export the parts --this will create the accompaniment and solo parts, give each the name you want, you are literally saving the accompaniment and instrumental part as two separate documents. Check to make sure the keys exported correctly if you are using a transposing instrument. open score merger under the file menu (I usually do this with the files closed to start). Choose the parts you want to print, select the order that you want them to show and save with a new name. (i.e. XXX score and parts). I've found that its much easier to format the different things you are going to merge (like font of titles, any text, note size, any % adjustment) while the parts are un-merged to have a consistent look when finished. (I keep a paper and pencil log of fonts I'm using, % of enlargement, etc. )
If you select the option of combining the score and parts as separate movements you don't have to worry about page breaks. After the merge is complete you can print to a PDF with any program you want, I use CutePDF writer, but there are a bunch of them out there.
This works well to create workbooks of several pages and is actually much easier to do if you are combining short pieces or short movements into a larger work. If you are looking at one of the new digital publishing options (sheet music plus has a neat program for that) this works really well. I haven't tried it with an ensemble piece yet, but there is no reason why this couldn't create a set of score and parts in one document. In the mountains

Sunshine has discovered the simplest way and I like it. Just merge the the extracted solo part and merge it with the score. Set up your page turns and Voila (not viola) - you have a document ready to become a PDF with both the Solo part and the accompaniment in one document. It's a piece of cake!

Thanks Sunshine,
