I'm about to buy one of the new iMacs, but I'm a bit disappointed that FireWire has been ditched. I've currently got a Roland Edirol FA-66, a FireWire-powered MIDI and audio interface. It's got 6 audio inputs and 6 outputs, plus MIDI. It doesn't need any drivers as it is designed for OS X's CoreAudio and CoreMIDI.

Can anyone recommend a roughly similar piece of kit that runs on USB? I know some things have had a patchy record with Finale, so I'd probably want to avoid those.

The Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6 looks quite nice. Anyone tried one of those?
MOTU Audio Express also seems similar. Weren' there problems with MOTU and Finale? Or are they all fixed?

Not answering your question directly, but wouldn't you be able to use the Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter (cost £25) with your present Audio/Midi set-up should you prefer to go on using it?

Before too long, I'll need to up-grade most of my computer equipment and software, so I have begun to note some of the options.

I have just replaced my Edirol FA-101 with a MOTU Audio Express (4 audio in, 4 out I think, 1 midi in, 1 midi out) and I am pleased, it is reliable. USB 2 and Firewire 400. I use it on USB, AC powered.

Perhaps. That adaptor adapts to a FW800, and I would then want to use an adaptor to FW400 to connect my Cinema Display's FW hub, giving me access to 2 FW ports for my G-Drive and the Roland Audio interface. I'm expecting that may not be without some problems. I was also hoping to use two external monitors from the Thunderbolt ports!

One of the beauties of FireWire was that many devices were bus-powered. USB 2 seems to provide some bus-power, but not as much. Hence the 2-USB plugged hard drives. Most of the USB Audio interfaces require a power lead at a much lower level of complexity than the FireWire equivalent. There don't seem to be (m)any USB3 audio interfaces yet, and I don't know whether USB3 is any better for power.
The other reason I like the Roland box is that it requires NO drivers. Finding a similar piece of kit that needs no drivers, is bus-powered and with a similar number of input/outputs is proving tricky.
