I've had this issue going back a few versions of Finale, including 2014. I'm writing the post now to kill some time during the 5-10 minutes I'll be waiting. So I'm picky about my chord symbols, so I have a set I've put together and saved as a "document options" file. I can import them into a new file no problem, but when I try to delete the default Finale chord symbols, I'm literally waiting upwards of 10 minutes for it to finish. My computer isn't some ancient device, either. Is this just an annoyance of Finale I'll have to put up with?

Can't say I've ever seen that. Is this when deleting the standard chords from the 2014 Maestro Default file, or something else?

I assume you are importing your custom chord suffixes via a Chord Suffix Library file. What happens if you delete the standard set before importing the Library? Is that any faster? I tried this and the suffixes deleted instantly, Finale 2012 and 2014.

The solution might be to import your suffixes into the Finale default files. That way any new files would come up ready with your custom set. See here: http://www.finalemusic.com/usermanuals/finale2014win/Content/Finale/Default_document.htm

Possibly there is file corruption. I highlight all the suffixes I want to delete, press the delete button, and I would say it takes 1/10 of a second. Maybe we need to test one of your files to see what's up.

Yes, if I delete first and then import second, it's usually quick, but I don't always remember to do that, and once I have imported the new ones, I'm stuck waiting (last night it took 25 minutes). As I said, this has happened to me on multiple versions of Finale (2007-2014) and on multiple OS's (Win 2k, Win7, Win10).

I import first then delete. 1/10 of a second either way.

P.S.: Okay, I made a few experiments and I got some other results, varying from 3-12 seconds. Even 12 seconds is not that long.

It wouldn't be hard to delete all (original and added) and then re-import the custom library if one forgot to delete the original library first (so long as one hadn't already started applying the custom marks--but then one would see too many marks when one went to apply the first and could make the correction then).
I don't blame Finale for an individual's work process.

One could always make a template with the custom library in it and base future work on that, adding instruments, etc. as needed.

I've encountered this a few times too, although it is very rare and only occurred with files I received from one specific client. I never found a solution for it, but I just wanted to reassure the OP that he's not the only one to encounter this. In my case, the files were created on a Mac on a much earlier version of Finale, and I was opening them on a PC with whatever the current version was at the time. I assumed that had something to do with it, but I never could figure it out. Normally if I delete a chord, it's gone instantly, but with files from this client, sometimes it would take a minute or more.

When this occurred I believe I was trying to edit his files directly. Now when I work for him, I simply copy everything from his file and dump it into my template. By doing it this way only the chord symbols used in the document copy over. I then delete his chords, replace with mine, and there's no delay.

I did make my chord template a long time ago on 2007 (actually, might've even been 2004). Maybe that has something to do with it. I guess I'll just be more cautious with my workflow in the future.

This has often been discussed here and it is one of MM's recommendations. It's generally a good idea to use new templates instead of continually updating old ones. The temptation is great, especially if you've put a lot of time into making good templates with all your settings and libraries, but it's well worth the effort in the long run as it can prevent a lot of anomalous behaviour.
