hi all,

i just transcribed a tune and wrote it in 4/4 but now i realize it should be in 2/4. is there any way to convert the music correctly (so that 8th notes become 16ths, quarter notes become 16ths etc) ?

thx in advance, -simon-

hi ricardo,

thx for tip however i have not been able to get this to work. i tried:

(in the mass mover tool)

1) select all
2) change->note durations
- using the selected notes option
- setting 1/4 notes convert to 1/8 notes

but the music is unintelligible

just to clarify i have a piece in 4/4 and i'd like to convert everything into the same number of bars as the original but

Simon,

Using the Time Signature tool, change the first measure to 2/4, and tick the check box 'rebar' measures or something like that. This will move one bar of 4/4 into 2 bars of 2/4.

thx for the response tim, the issue here is that i want the bar of 4/4 to become a single bar of 2/4 not 2 bars of 2/4. if all the notes switch accordingly (ie: 1/4 go to 1/8 notes, 1/8ths to 1/16ths) i'll have what i need and won't need to rewrite the chart.

maybe this just isn't possible in finale?

thx again, -simon-

Simon,
Another easy way to do that is to change the time signature from 4/4 to cut time. That way, the notes can remain the same but be played as if they were of half the value.
Hope this helps.

It must be!

Didn't Tim's suggestion work? I am surprised. By the way, why did you choose to modify "only selected notes"? This will indeed screw up the music if there are mixed durations.

And I suppose that when Tim referred to rebarring the music from 4/4 to 2/4, he meant you to do it after halving all the durations.

If you replace all quarter notes with eighth notes, this won't achieve what you want: it will only affect quarter notes. You need to change all note durations by 50%. You'll also need to make sure that Finale does not rebar the music at this point. Here's what you need to do:

1. Select all with Mass Edit.
2. Choose "Change>>Note Durations".
3. Select "Change all note durations by 50%" and remove the check mark by "Rebar Music". Press OK.
4. Select the Time Signature tool.
5. Change time signature to 2/4, also making sure that "Rebar Music" is not checked.

Oops - I missed the bit about wanting to halve all the note values. Sorry!
