Does anybody understand this (Wiggy, where are you?)?

Can I safely trash Finale.mdimporter from Library/Spotlight? Will it be automatically replaced next time I launch Finale?

Currently it's causing mdworker to crash incessantly (see attached crash log) so that Spotlight takes for ever to complete its indexing.

The Finale.mdimporter problem has been around for some years, and I think continues into f2011. You can trash the file (or move it into "/Library/Spotlight_disabled") without ill effect. It will only be re-installed if you re-install Finale.

Thanks.

I've created a Library/Spotlight_disabled folder in which I've put the offending Finale.mdimporter.

On my back-up computer Finale.mdimporter appears to be working without any problem. Is there any reason why I shouldn't just duplicate that one and put the duplicate in the Library/Spotlight folder of my main computer? Perhaps after repairing permissions on all disks connected to my main computer?

I don't really know what I'm doing here, so any advice will be appreciated.

I have once or twice found Spotlight's indexing of my Finale files useful, so would prefer not to lose that altogether.

This morning I installed the F2012a update, which re-installed Finale.mdimporter

This resulted in immediate cessation (slowing to a crawl) of scheduled Time Machine backup, owing to mdworker continually crashing. Removed the new Finale.mdimporter and process went back to completely normal.

There's something screwy with this file (even if it doesn't affect everybody's system).

So, how many updates on Finale and still no addressing this known bug?

Thank you for those who posted on this - All of a sudden Spotlight went haywire and said it had 200 hours left to index. Moving Finale.mdimporter from Library/Spotlight solved the problem.

My 2c - I have had tremendous trouble with Time Machine being as slow as a wet week, recently. Looking at the Console logs, and particularly mdworker32, it seems that it is indeed /Library/Spotlight/Finale.mdimporter/Contents/MacOS/Finale that was the culprit.

After disabling the Spotlight plugin, however, Time Machine has gone from a backup rate of 3GB per day to about 1GB per minute. Much better.

I ordered and installed 2012 today (they gave me 2012a to download which was odd). Indeed the version of the plugin changed from 1.1 (2010) to 2.0 after this was installed, according to the logs.

There is mention of 2012b fixing "Spotlight issues" in its documentation.

There is also a "fontd" process which is cycling in and out a lot, and taking a lot of processor time - maybe that's another font problem introduced in Finale 2012a?

Matthew, the B update does indeed fix the Spotlight problem, and allow use of Finale metadata in Spotlight.

At the moment, the B update is only an updater, rather than a full installer. Hence the need to download the A version and update it.

Your fontd issue may not be Finale related. Not all problems are! But as usual, make sure you've got no duplicate fonts enabled in FontBook.
