Back in the time of the showcase, I found some music I love now. I don't know who wrote it, or if it's original. I haven't found any recordings of it. I look for viola music, and there's not very much of it. The piece was labeled "Concerto for Viola". There was no composer listed, but I really want to arrange it for orchestra. If you are the composer, please let me know. Its 16 pages long and created in Finale 2006.r3

I'd contact Make Music. Maybe they have an archive they can search and come up with the post. Did the contributions have a user name attached? If so, they have an email address. Maybe they would contact the person for you.

It's nice that you are attempting so set things straight.

But remember, you're asking for historical data from a company that claims it has no copies of older versions of their software...

However, props for asking, Matt!

So, Mike
Are you saying I should just do it?
That doesn't seem right. There must be a way.
N. Grossnick,
There is no user data attached.
I really love this piece, but it feels wrong to use someone else's music without permission.
Do you think posting the file would help someone recognize it?

No, no, no! What I meant was that I wouldn't expect MM to keep any information like that. You are totally to be commended for trying to find the composer.

On the other hand, I wouldn't let that stop me from working on the piece. You can always say "composer unknown, arrangement by...” making it clear that it isn't your original work. If the composer appears (and can prove it!) you can deal with it at that point.
