When working in Speedy - as I most often do - if I want to make changes 'inside' the bar, if I select a note or rest and delete it everything shifts to the left. So even if I want to make small changes, I always end up having to re-do the entire contents of a measure.

For instance, I have a half note rest followed by a rhythmic figure. I want to add an eighth note pickup before the rhythmic figure. With pencil and paper I would simply erase the half rest, change to dotted quarter and add the eighth note pickup.

With Speedy, any change I make it all shifts left and I have to rewrite the entire bar.

Is there a way to freeze notes in place so as to edit more freely?

Thanks!

No way I know of. Re-entering the rest of the measures is usually easier than what I do, which is to use the plugin to divide the note value of the note needing replacing, then changing the 2 parts to what you need. In other words, divide the half into two quarters, change the second to an 8th, then the first to a dotted quarter.

It's not complicated... to change a half rest as described, I would move the cursor to the half rest and hit 5 to change it to a quarter rest. Then I would press the Insert key to toggle to Insert mode, and enter the eighth rest and eight note after the quarter rest.

4 keystrokes.

If the composer says in effect to the performer: "I do not care whether you perform my music or not," we cannot argue the matter. But if he indicates: "I want you to perform and respond to this music," then his fundamental duty is to write his music so that it is accessible to interpretation. When the performer cannot approach the composer's meaning because of capriciously obscure notation, he may in effect say to the composer: "Why should I bother to puzzle out your music?" - Gardner Read

I should have thought of that. Sometimes one way works better than others. When lyrics are attached, my workflow is sometimes different than when not.

I do this fairly often. The beaming may get temporarily screwed up, but it corrects itself when the measure is again fleshed out.

“|” which is shift with \ (on a UK version of the Mac keyboard immediately above the left-hand shift key).

EDIT: !!! I don't know my right from my left - it's immediately above the RIGHT-hand shift key.

In addition, you know you are in "Insert" mode when the vertical bar in the edit frame has small black triangles at the top and bottom.  BTW, my US keyboard has an "Ins" key in the cluster of keys above the arrow keys.  The "|" does not function in this capacity on Windows.

When I have to do this, I follow Flint's method, but instead of hitting the Insert key (which I forgot even existed), I just hold down the shift key while entering the eighth rest and eighth note and they get inserted where they're supposed to without messing up the rest of the measure.
