Anyone have any idea how to make the slash notation even across these four bars? I've tried note- and time signature-spacing.

If you have hidden notes in that measure, you should set them to be omitted from spacing.

woodwind specialist and doubler - Finale 2014d using Speedy Entry - no capslock, GPO 4 Full, Garritan Jazz & Big Band 3, Garritan Concert and Marching Band 2, Windows 8 64-bit, 12GB RAM

If the composer says in effect to the performer: "I do not care whether you perform my music or not," we cannot argue the matter. But if he indicates: "I want you to perform and respond to this music," then his fundamental duty is to write his music so that it is accessible to interpretation. When the performer cannot approach the composer's meaning because of capriciously obscure notation, he may in effect say to the composer: "Why should I bother to puzzle out your music?" - Gardner Read

I do indeed have notes in that measure. I've never had to set notes to be omitted from spacing...how does one do that?

Even when there are NO notes covered by the slash notation, sometimes I get uneven slashes. I think it is related to extraneous beat markers being present from when there USED to be eighth notes, or something like that.

The way I deal with it is select ALL in the Selection Tool and hit 5 (beat spacing, clears the oddities), then 4 (note spacing, that's normal spacing for most uses.) I see this so often that it is a tic now.

I just put in Quarter Rests, copy them to all measures w/slashes, apply Slash Notation, spacing is even.

Some arrangers want the realised chording for playback purposes. I usually don't have anything in my slash notation, except sometimes small rests like 8ths or 16ths to open up more space for a long chord symbol.

Yes, very good, but if someone (me!) is controlling spacing by using hidden rests, this will be counterproductive.

A blessing AND a curse to have so many different ways to accomplish things in Finale!

Yes, it's also a blessing to be able to apply spacing to only parts of a score at a time. I often load different spacing libraries for different movements and even different instrumental parts in a score. I also do a couple of passes with different settings to get grace note spacing right in different situations, something Finale still isn't able to do in one go. Since Finale generally allows too much space for ledger lines, I'll often start with spacing for LL turned off and turn it on only when necessary.

After my request for Robert to include an option for ledger lines in his new "Note Spacing Options" plug-in, this type of workaround is not necessary. If you look in the lower part of the plugin you will see "Minimum Distance Between Ledger Lines." Type a number to adjust the ledger line distance when applying music spacing then click the OK button. The plug-in will use the file's current music spacing options if you don't highlight an option in the top part of the plug-ing.

What it's doing under the hood (within a split second) is changing the length of the ledger line before music spacing is applied, then putting the line length back to your document settings. Simple and much more control. I also asked for the same type of thing to be done with upstem flags. I realize the dbx looks like you need to put in music spacing information for it to work but you do not. If you leave everything alone and you do not highlight an option in the top part of the dbx the plugin will use the document's music spacing.

Cheers,
SF

Hey Nikk,

Is this a chart of that tune Hey Ya by Outkast? If so, every fourth measure of the song should be a measure of 2/4.

Thanks, SF! I'd never noticed that particular plugin. It's very useful and I'm immediately going to make a keyboard shortcut to call it up easily.
It's a very clever way of dealing with ledger lines but it's still a pity that Finale's core functionality is lacking in this regard.
