I'm trying to use an expression shape to mask a line that would cross through the lyrics. My goal is to mask the the part of the line that crosses through the lyrics. However when I try to mask the line it also masks the lyric text (except for the hyphen). See attached for a screenshot.

Is there a way to to mask only the line?

The music is for beginning piano students, who expect left-hand notes to appear in the bass clef and right-hand notes to appear in the treble.

Being able to control "stacking" of elements has been a sore spot for a while. My suggestion would be to use two lines.

Yes. You have to attached the opaque box and line (as an expression) to the measure before.

Thank you for the tips!

SF, how do you attach the box and line to the measure before? When I try to attached it to a previous measure and then move it to the correct location (using the arrow keys), it reattaches to the current measure instead of the previous.

Hold down alt while moving. I believe that works with mouse dragging. It doesn't seem to work with arrow keys.

As Zuill points out, you can hold down the Alt key while dragging the box.
Take a look at the setting in
Preferences > Edit > Movable Items
where you can revert the effect of holding down/not holding down the Alt key.

To position the box you can also use the dialog box Expression Assignment.
To get there quickly, drag-select the box handle, and hit Shift-Return.
