When I enter "pizz" on any line of the score, it produces a deep rumble on playback, like a freight train going by. When I remove the pizz marking, the noise does not occur. Closing and reopening Finale doesn't help. What causes that and how can I stop it?

Also: The detail panel on opening Finale notates 5 staves, but there are only four in the score. And quarter notes entered in the cello line have a very soft ..'..'..' in the background, reminiscent of an earlier section of the score. Could that be related?

This just began tonight. Never experienced it before.

We might need a sample file. Your signature says you are using 2011. Someone with 2011 should test the file, as there are some differences in newer versions.

I have 2014 (should have updated my profile), but this was begun when 11b was current, and I didn't see any need to migrate it.

What do you mean by "test" the file?

This particular piece is a string quartet I quit working on because I didn't like where it was going. A few weeks ago I deleted a few pages and restarted. The first movement score as it now stands is only about a dozen pages

The is no problem with any of the pizz markings previously entered, only with the ones I entered tonight. I'm doubtful that submitting the file would help any. Surely adding a pizz mark wouldn't cause the same problem on someone else's computer -- unless there is some spurious data hidden somewhere that needs to be dug out.

Some long time ago I think someone on this forum mentioned a clean up utility that might solve such problems. I don't remember what it was or where to find it.

I'm a little bit perturbed that Finale 25 appears to erase and replace all previous versions. Maybe 2014 is the last upgrade I will ever do. 11 and 14 do everything I need.

Since I don't get the rumble, I was thinking it might be file specific. if this is happening on all files, then it is system wide. However, this doesn't happen for me. Sometimes, we can find a cause by examining a file.

I haven't heard v25 erases other versions. If this is the case, I would be surprised.

It appears to happen only in this one file, and there only in measures going forward, not in measures previously written. Unless there is some way to scrub the file of this anomaly, I think I'm looking at a compete rewrite from scratch in a new file. Maybe Finale tech will have a solution.

As for Finale 25, my comment was based on a quick glance at Ron's current thread, where several people had disastrous results from the Finale 25 installer. On closer reading the problems appear to affect only previous installations of 25. I didn't see any instances of deleting previous versions. But I'd still be wary until there is more information. A good backup is always imperative.

Before you rewrite from scratch, try exporting as XML and importing into a new file. It may not work, but it would be easier than inputting from scratch.

Actually, what I did was to print off the pages that would not play back properly, then open a new file, with a new file name, and copy and paste from an earlier version (I always save copies of my work at progressive stages of development), then re-enter the notes of the corrupted measures from the print copy. There weren't very many.

It appears that it was a Windows problem, not originating in Finale, namely on several occasions the Windows CheckDisk process has deleted, then recovered "orphaned" files, placing them in a different folder than where they belonged. I once had a stack of emails removed from a personal email account and attached to a corporate account. In this case, I yesterday opened the third movement of the quartet and discovered that Windows had attached, without clefs or measure bars, a long string of notes from the second movement. The second movement was not changed, just a segment was copied and pasted onto the end of the third movement. I deleted the spurious notes, and the file worked OK.

So it's all OK now, and I know how to deal with the problem if it occurs again. Meanwhile, I will extend my practice of saving multiple copies of my work at stages of development.

(Yes, I know, I need to reinstall Windows to get rid of the corrupted bytes.)

Do you have a unique folder for temp files for each version of Finale? I have found this is the best way to stave off these kind of problems. These folders can be placed anywhere, as long as your preferences point to them. I have one for Finale 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2014.5, If and when I get v25, there will be one for that as well.

I have separate folders for each of my Finale versions, beginning with 2008, and within those folders I have sub-folders for the various genres of music -- choral, chamber, etc. -- and within those, discrete folders for individual works. For example: Quartet A, Quartet B. etc Then each of those folders contains a folder for each segment of the work -- Mov I, Mov II, etc. And finally, each of those folders contains the various progressive revisions along the course of its composition. For example, my Elegy for Cello and Piano, titled "Heather in sorrow" (written for the occasion of the tragic death of my granddaughter's best friend) is saved in various versions along the way as -- Heather-a, Heather-b, etc. -- some of these consisting of minor changes I might want to change my mind on, such as clef assignments for the cello. I can go back to an earlier partial or complete version at any time.

None of these are Temp files. Each is a full permanent file, saved to both internal and external hard storage as well as the cloud. Storage is not a problem. Finale *.MUS files are not large, and storage is cheap. The first computer I bought had a 5 Mb 8-inch hard drive that cost over $1000 to replace. Now you can get a Terabyte internal drive for around $60. There's no reason not to pile on storage in excess. I have several external drives totaling about 15 terabytes, rigged for automatic incremental storage. Saving 100 Mb *.WAV files along with their related Finale *.MUS files is no problem. The cloud storage (Carbonite) is the final recourse, not as fast and easy to recover from as well-organized local storage, but safe against all contingencies. I lost all my computer files in a fire in 2007, and it will never happen to me again. If I don't have time to grab my external drives and run, I can still recover most everything from offsite.

The folders for temp files are entirely different from document folders. Look in preferences to see where the temp files are going. iI each version has them going to the Windows Temp folder, that might be your problem. Finale might be mixing things up between different sessions of Finale, or between different versions. Finale leaves temp files behind when closing. You might have hundreds, if not thousands of those. Because I have them in discreet folders, I can find them and, when Finale is closed, delete them. They are not longer needed once Finale closes.

If my explanation is not clear, maybe someone else can try to explain it better.

Now I understand what you meant by Temp files. Temp files are supposed to be deleted by the system when they are no longer needed for a current process. Some hang around forever and clog up the system. It is good practice to purge all the Temp folders from time to time. I checked the Finale Temp folder under Documents and Settings and found it empty. I'm fairly sure that the problem arose from a corruption of the Windows operating system rather than anything in Finale.
