What would be considered "Best Practices" when exporting orchestral score to DAW ?

I have an orchestral score with HP configured and would like to fine tune it in Cubase.
Should I export MIDI (will I lose my HP) or individual wav track by track.

Export MIDI, all tracks together so that they stay in sync. If HP is on for playback, then it will be incorporated in the MIDI file.

Make sure that the correct playback engine is enabled before you export the MIDI, or else you may not get the correct key switches and CC controls that you are expecting.

For example, if you are using Aria VST for playback in Finale, and you are planning to use the Aria VST in your DAW, you need to make sure you initialize the Aria engine in Finale before exporting the MIDI (perhaps the easiest way to do that it to start playback in Finale -- you don't have to play the entire piece).

I had a problem once when I opened the MUS file in Finale, and exported MIDI without loading the VST engine. When I imported the MIDI into my DAW, all the CC were incorrect because they had GM/SoftSynth settings (such as using CC 7 for volume instead of CC 1 that most of the Garritan instruments were expecting, etc.). After I played the piece in Finale and exported MIDI again, I got a completely different set of CC data in the file that worked as expected when I imported it into my DAW.

I'm not good at explaining, and probably made this sound more complicated that it is. Easiest thing I found to do is to remember to start/stop playback before exporting MIDI, and then you will get what you expect.

Best Regards,
Ernie

Ernie is right,
If you want to keep the HP effect, always export from Finale to MIDI with the right vsti loaded.
Then use the same vsti in your DAW.
Also, with most vsti, you can save your instruments selections as multi or combi...
So it is easier in your daw to load all your instruments

I tried all of the suggestions above, but when playing back the midi in Cubase it sounds very choppy, not at all what it sounds like in Finale. The instrument sounds are all correct and the Aria VST is set up in Cubase exactly like it is in Finale. Seems like it brings in some HP and not others...not sure what I'm doing wrong.

One thing I noticed in HP Preferences. There is a check box below that says "Attach to Active File". Should this be checked ? Couldn't find anything in Help about this.

I realize why my midi was choppy. When exporting to midi the Garritan Ambience is not exported. When I added reverb in my DAW to the midi tracks, the sound improved 100%...no longer choppy...Much closer to the original in Finale. I took for granted that Garritan Amience would be exported along with HP.

In the case of Garritan instruments it's probably necessary to load the Notation instruments in your DAW's vst instances rather than the standard patches so all the keyswitches and controllers work properly.

I assume that loading the Notation instruments into Pro Tools (using RTAS rather than VST) would be fine as well, yes?

In a small sample test that I did, most of the controller data imported with the MIDI file EXCEPT for tremolo. Is there something that I need to setup differently in that case?

thanks,
Tommy

I did load Garritan instruments exactly like I had them in Finale into my DAW (Cubase). What I'm saying is that the Garritan Ambience (Reverb) portion did not exported. I know this because when I played the original in Finale and bypassed Garritan Ambience, it sounded choppy. So I'm saying that "Garritan Ambience" does not get exported in midi. If it does, I must be doing something wrong.

No the Ambience won't get exported.

I didn't mean to confuse the issue and was probably bringing up something you already knew by suggesting you load the notation instruments.

I realized what I did wrong. In the Aria play, after loading into my DAW, I failed to set the output knobs. The were showing as 0. I cranked them up all the way, for each instrument and then I got the Garritan Ambience (Reverb) that I had set in Finale. It's funny that in Finale, the Aria player show the output knobs set to zero but I can still here the Garritan Ambience (Reverb), but when exporting midi and setting up the Aria player in my DAW I see that in order for me get the Garritan Ambience (Reverb) effects I have to increase the output knobs.

Oh ok I see what you're saying. You mean the Ambience within the Aria player as opposed to the seperate plugin. Got it now.
